Use of a filter-paper disk assay in the measurement of lipid biosynthesis

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1966
The precipitation by trichloroacetic acid (TCA) of radioactive lipids on disks of filter-paper, followed by extraction with TCA and water to remove soluble radioactive precursors, provides the means for a convenient assay for lipid biosynthesis.

Nanofiber PVA‐Based Membranes Incorporating Functionalized Spanish Broom Derivatives for Sustainable Water Purification

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
This study investigates Spanish broom (Spartium junceum) as a renewable source for electrospun composite membranes in sustainable water purification. MCC and biochar were functionalized with eco‐friendly precursors and nanomaterials (i.e., HNT, β‐CDs) to develop hybrid PVA nanofiber composites.

Manganese-56 coincidence-counting facility precisely measures neutron-source strength [PDF]

open access: yes, 1969
Precise measurement of neutron-source strength is provided by a manganese 56 coincidence-counting facility using the manganese-bath technique. This facility combines nuclear instrumentation with coincidence-counting techniques to handle a wide variety of

Datação radiocarbônica de sítios arqueológicos do tipo sambaqui pela técnica de absorção de CO2: uma alternativa à síntese benzênica

open access: yesQuímica Nova, 2004
The sambaquis are archaeological sites with remains of pre-historical Brazilian civilizations. They look like small hills containing different kinds of shells, animal and fish bones, small artifacts and even human skeletons.

Direct in-vial collection for liquid-scintillation assay of carbon-14 and tritium [PDF]

open access: yes, 1969
Dissolution of biological materials combines the simplicity of oxygen-flask combustion with the reproducibility and purity of the final product, and convenience of direct in-vial collection of the sample by the sealed-tube method. It assures quantitative

The Non‐Professional Virtues of the Hospice Volunteer

open access: yesJournal of Applied Philosophy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Volunteers have long played a significant role in hospice care. Much of the care volunteers provide consists of weekly hour‐long in‐home visits. Home‐visiting hospice volunteers are not professionals, nor are they strangers or intimates. Hospice volunteers will not typically face moral dilemmas, nor be called upon to make dramatic decisions ...

Coccolithophore particulate inorganic and organic carbon ratios: An evaluation of acid decalcification methods

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract Accurate direct measurements of coccolithophore particulate inorganic and organic carbon ratios (PIC/POC) are crucial for understanding the physiology and role these microbes play in global ocean carbon flux. Direct measurements of POC are commonly obtained by acid fuming or applying acid directly to filters to dissolve PIC (CaCO3) prior to CN
