More Science Than Art: The First Botanical Garden in Portugal (c. 1650)

open access: yesRenaissance Studies, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Gabriel Grisley, a German physician, came to Portugal and founded a garden near the Xabregas River in Lisbon, during the 1610s under the Spanish kings' rule. In view of the utility a botanic garden represented for the kingdom, he was able to obtain a royal privilege from King João IV during the Restauration War against the Spanish (1640–1668).

Star Formation and Extinction in Redshift z~2 Galaxies: Inferences from Spitzer MIPS Observations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Using very deep Spitzer/MIPS 24 micron observations, we present an analysis of the bolometric luminosities (L[bol]) and UV extinction properties of more than 200 spectroscopically identified, optically selected (UGR) z~2 galaxies in the GOODS-N field ...

Evaluating putative lncRNA‐mediated ceRNA regulatory network involving miR396 and miR319 in maize leaf growth under Fusarium verticillioides infection

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, Volume 189, Issue 1, July 2026.
The final leaf length of maize (Zea mays) was reduced due to the pathogenic fungus Fusarium verticillioides infection as a result of increased expression of miR396 in the elongation zone and decreased expression of miR319 in the mature zone of maize leaves, leading to antagonistic regulation of the expression of the GRF15 and TCP38, respectively ...

Study protocol: role of the blood-brain barrier in stress resilience: investigating new pathways towards Pharmacological augmentation of stress resilience (a PHASR-PP project study)

open access: yesBMC Psychology
Background Preclinical research indicates that the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is an important resilience factor. Further, there is preclinical evidence suggesting that the mTOR pathway regulates BBB function and that pharmacological ...

PACS2 Alleviates Sepsis‐Induced Myopathy by Activating ERK–MAPK Signalling Pathway to Suppress ER‐Phagy

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, Volume 17, Issue 3, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Sepsis‐induced myopathy (SIM) is a common and life‐threatening complication, but its underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. PACS2, a key resident protein at mitochondria‐associated endoplasmic reticulum membranes (MAMs), regulates ER homeostasis under various pathological conditions.

What shapes the far-infrared spectral energy distributions of galaxies? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
To explore the connection between the global physical properties of galaxies and their far-infrared (FIR) spectral energy distributions (SEDs), we study the variation in the FIR SEDs of a set of hydrodynamically simulated galaxies that are generated by ...

The Dual Role of Autophagy in Cancer: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Strategies

open access: yesMedComm – Oncology, Volume 5, Issue 2, June 2026.
Autophagy is a conserved cellular process degrading dysfunctional organelles and protein aggregates to maintain cell homeostasis, and it exhibits context‐dependent duality in cancer. Autophagy functions as a critical tumor‐suppressive mechanism by preventing DNA damage and mutation during tumor initiation.

Molecular determinants regulating selective binding of autophagy adapters and receptors to ATG8 proteins

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
Autophagy adaptors and receptors contain LC3-interacting region (LIR) motifs that bind selectively to the LIR docking site of GABARAP and other members of the ATG8 family. Here the authors show that in addition to the LIR motif also the region C-terminal

GOODS-Herschel: a population of 24 μm dropout sources at z<2 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Using extremely deep PACS 100- and 160 μm Herschel data from the GOODS-Herschel program, we identify 21 infrared bright galaxies previously missed in the deepest 24   μm surveys performed by Spitzer/MIPS.
