Dynamic allocation of listening effort when listening to speech
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2018Measuring listening effort is an essential part of understanding the communication ability of a person with hearing loss. In this study, we are using pupillometry to measure how listener effort changes over the course of an utterance, in cases where the listener has reason to allocate effort earlier or later in time.

Speech intelligibility and listening effort in every-day listening situations
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2017Noise and reverberation affect speech intelligibility and increase listening effort. The impact is more severe for hearing-impaired listeners than for normal-hearing listeners and might lead to less social interactions, and reduced quality of life. While lab experiments are well controlled to get reliable outcomes, every-day listening situations are ...

Developing objective measures of listening effort.
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2009The goal of the present work is to develop valid measures of listening effort independent of task difficulty. Various markers of effort will be measured for listening conditions of varying difficulty but with equal performance. The experimental task will involve tracking a previously specified keyword(s) in a speech sample.

Eye track, you listen: Listening effort in cochlear implant users
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of AmericaCochlear Implant (CI) users can experience mental fatigue from the listening effort needed to process the degraded speech information delivered by the implant. Listening effort is unique to the individual CI user and may provide insight into the strengths and weaknesses of real-world speech communication. To analyze listening effort, an eye tracker lab

Adjusting listening effort relative to expected value of listening
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of AmericaListening effort is a commonly reported difficulty among those who have hearing loss. A person’s ability to engage or disengage mental resources at strategic times could be an important signature of a person’s capacity to guard against wasted effort. This experiment gave listeners an opportunity to voluntarily reduce effort at specific moments based on

The Autonomic Correlates of Listening Effort
2019For those with hearing impairment, listening in daily life communication requires excessive mental effort, even when using a hearing aid. This increased daily effort causes fatigue and reduced well-being. In recent years, researchers have utilised physiological measures to quantify listening effort; however, the chosen methods are seldom driven by ...
