"Two tribes": Handaxe shape variation shows distinct regional cultural groups in southeastern Britain between 424 000 and 374 000 BP

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, Volume 41, Issue 4, Page 602-621, May 2026.
ABSTRACT This paper examines regional and chronological variations in Acheulean handaxe morphology during Marine Isotope Stage 11 (c. 425–365 ka BP) in Britain. Using a data set of 737 handaxes from 13 securely dated sites in East Anglia and the Thames Valley, we apply three‐dimensional geometric morphometric analysis to examine morphological ...

Occurrence of Crocuta (Carnivora, Hyaenidae) from a potential Middle Pleistocene site at Pirro Nord (Apricena, southern Italy)

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, Volume 41, Issue 4, Page 552-557, May 2026.
ABSTRACT The Pirro Nord quarry has yielded evidence of one of the earliest hominin presences in western Europe, accompanied by an extremely rich and diverse collection of vertebrate remains, including amphibians, reptiles, birds, and small and large mammals.

Reconstructing the Holocene explosive eruptive history of the Erciyes volcano (Turkey) using proximal and distal tephra records

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, Volume 41, Issue 4, Page 645-659, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Mount Erciyes, the largest active volcano of Central Anatolia (Turkey), erupted explosively during the Holocene, producing the Karagüllü, Perikartin and Dikkartin tuff rings. Even though major cities like Kayseri and its ~1 million residents sit directly on these pyroclastic deposits, the timing and magnitude of the explosive eruptions have ...

Assessing Deposit‐Derived Pyroclastic Flow Hazard at Stromboli (Italy): 1. Reconstruction of the Dynamics of the 11 September 1930 Event

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Stromboli volcano (Italy) is known for its persistent explosive activity punctuated by more energetic explosions called paroxysms. During paroxysms, pyroclastic density currents, triggered by the gravitational instability of hot pyroclastic deposits, can occur.

Aspect Asymmetry in Martian Gullies: A Topographic Signature of Their Formation Process?

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract On Mars, erosional‐depositional landforms named gullies provide natural experiments for studying the topographic signature of the processes that act on hillslope evolution. High‐resolution topographic data were used to quantitatively compare the steepness of opposing walls in gully alcoves incised into ice‐rich slopeside mantling deposits.

Olivine Microstructure Constraints on Ureilite Parent Body Deformation

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Ureilites are ultramafic achondrites for which the parent body is unknown. Monomict ureilites, consisting primarily of olivine and pyroxene, are thought to represent mantle residues, carrying essential information for their parent body deformation history.
