Abstract The safety characteristics of recent commercial lithium ion cells are examined in relation to their use for cellular phones. These are prismatic cells with an aluminum cell housing (can) and a 500–600 mA h capacity. They have one of two types of 4-V class cathodes, lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) or lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4).

Cell Equalization of Lithium Ion Cells
SAE Technical Paper Series, 2006<div class="htmlview paragraph">With increased use of Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) batteries in military and space applications, it is important to understand individual cell performance. The performance of the individual cells in a four cell, 45 ampere hour (Ah) Li-ion battery was obtained through repeated cycle testing.

On safety of lithium-ion cells
Journal of Power Sources, 1999Abstract Safety of lithium-ion cells is mainly related to thermal reactivity of the components. Active materials play a major role: carbon materials because they directly influence the kinetics of reactions at the negative electrode, positive materials because of their relation with their respective delithiation state.
