The mode of action of the cation lithium is not well known. It is at present used as a topical drug in dermatology. Lithium inhibits many enzymes: Na/K ATPase, adenylcyclase, enzymes of the prostaglandines E1 synthesis, inositol-1-phosphatase. It is active on neutrophils et T lymphocytes, explaining in part its anti-inflammatory activity. It has a dose-

Lithium carbonate is used in the treatment of both psychiatric and nonpsychiatric disorders. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between serum lithium, salivary lithium, and urinary lithium. Blood, saliva, and urine samples were collected from 50 patients, and estimation of serum, salivary, and urine lithium was done using an atomic ...

Parkinsonian symptoms with lithium, lithium-neuroleptic, and lithium-antidepressant treatment
Journal of Affective Disorders, 1983Eighty-one patients treated for a least 3 months with lithium were examined for the presence of parkinsonian symptoms. Twenty-four patients were receiving treatment with lithium alone, 30 with lithium and 1 or more neuroleptics, and 27 with lithium and antidepressant. Twenty-four of the patients were found to be free from parkinsonian symptoms.

Higher hydrates of lithium chloride, lithium bromide and lithium iodide
Acta Crystallographica Section C Structural Chemistry, 2018For lithium halides, LiX (X = Cl, Br and I), hydrates with a water content of 1, 2, 3 and 5 moles of water per formula unit are known as phases in aqueous solid–liquid equilibria. The crystal structures of the monohydrates of LiCl and LiBr are known, but no crystal structures have been reported so far for the higher hydrates, apart from LiI·3H2O.

Lithium utility and toxicity are reviewed. Lithium continues to be the most useful agent available for the prophylaxis and treatment of bipolar illness. Lithium augmentation of antidepressants is useful in treatment-resistant unipolar depression. Utility in other psychiatric disorders, such as schizoaffective, alcoholism, or aggressive behavior, is ...

Lithium in children of lithium-responding parents
Psychiatry Research, 1981Six offspring of manic-depressive patients, whose parents were lithium responders, were selected on the basis of their incapacitating psychopathology for treatment with lithium. The children ranged in age from 6 to 12. A double-blind, crossover design was used over 16-18 weeks. Weekly ratings were done, and average evoked potentials (EPs) were measured

Renal lithium clearance and the serum lithium levels following a single oral loading dose of lithium were used as measures to predict lithium dose requirement during long-term maintenance at 3 different psychiatric centers in North America. Saliva lithium values were also investigated at one of the centers. The correlation between lithium clearance and

A register of patients receiving lithium in the Edinburgh and Lothian area of Scotland has been kept by the Medical Research Council Brain Metabolism Unit since 1967. Using this register, information was obtained on 784 patients receiving lithium for a period of up to 115 months (97.4% of the population available for study). 33 patients died during the
