We compared local density measures of migratory birds collected using a mobile, vertically looking radar with reflectivity from a Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) station across varying distances and topographies. Broadly, mean nightly migration activity and within night migration activity between NEXRAD and the mobile radar were strongly ...

Disability and postsecondary fieldwork experiences in the natural sciences: A systematic review
Abstract We present a systematic review of 29 empirical studies on disability and fieldwork in natural science, postsecondary educational settings. Undergraduate students with disabilities are underrepresented in STEM, and disciplines requiring major field components are some of the least diverse, at least in part because fieldwork has been ...

Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract The concept of growing degree days (GDDs) is commonly used to predict phenological events in plants, assuming that plants develop proportionally to the accumulated temperature. Two species‐specific parameters, TBase and t0 (minimum temperature above which and start date

A landscape‐level perspective revealed that variation in soil and climate factors can explain geospatial variation in sex ratio and sexual dimorphism in a wild strawberry. Variation in sex ratio was associated more with soil resources than climate, while variation in sexual dimorphism was the result of sex‐differential responses to climate for ...

Coupling Between Lithosphere Removal and Mantle Flow in the Central Andes
The central Andes is part of a Cordilleran orogen formed through continent‐ocean convergence. In contrast to the thickened crust, the mantle lithosphere below much of the orogen is anomalously thin.

We found distinct genetic and genome size differentiation in the two ecotypes (C‐ and E‐type) of Imperata cylindrica. We also found that the C‐type has greater genetic diversity than the E‐type. These results suggest that the two ecotypes have different histories of differentiation and range expansion.

High phenotypic variation in femoral pore number across 55 populations of Podarcis muralis is best explained by a combination of positive allometry (size) and the local intensity of sexual selection (sexual dimorphism in body size, SSD) or local climatic conditions, notably temperature and vegetation density.

Foundational guiding principles for a flourishing Earth system
Abstract In this perspectives article, we maintain that the current local to global sustainable development predicaments we face are the result of humanity's impact on the Earth System (ES)—that is to say, on the very systemic fabric of the ES (i.e., its functioning and configuration), combined with an insufficiently coherent application of sustainable
