Soil biota in grassland, its ecosystem services and the impact of management [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
In the search for sustainable grassland systems, self-regulating processes in the soil become increasingly important. Soil biota play an important role in these processes and in the provision of various ecosystem services. For grassland systems important

Exploring variations in potential carbon and nitrogen mineralization in managed grasslands among the diversity of soils in North Carolina

open access: yesGrassland Research, EarlyView.
Under steady–state conditions, potential nitrogen mineralization in soil under grasslands is closely tied to potential carbon mineralization. This study provides supporting evidence that field–specific nitrogen fertilizer recommendations could be indicated by using a simple and rapid analysis of soil–test biological activity.

The Relevance of Apology to Reparations for Historical Injustice

open access: yesJournal of Applied Philosophy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article explains the centrality of apology to an adequate account of reparations. I look in depth at what goes on in apology. As I have previously argued, apology is an expressive action through which we seek to mark adequately the significance of our own wrongdoing. I claim that apology so understood is not merely ornamental.

Paternal Exposure to the Neonicotinoid Pesticide Clothianidin Alters Sperm MicroRNA Profiles in Mice and Intergenerationally Reduces Locomotor Activity in Male Offspring

open access: yesJournal of Applied Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Accumulating evidence suggests that paternal environmental factors have epigenetic effects on sperm and influence offspring. Neonicotinoid pesticides (NNs), which are widely used around the world, are known to affect offspring phenotypes through maternal exposure in mice, but the effect of the paternal exposure remains unknown.

Human Health Risk Assessment From Exposure to Toxic Metals in Soils and Leafy Vegetables in Smallholder Farms of Northeastern Brazil

open access: yesJournal of Applied Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study assessed human health risks associated with exposure to potentially toxic metals (PTMs) in soils and leafy vegetables cultivated in smallholder agricultural systems in Northeastern Brazil. Soil and vegetable samples were collected from 18 agricultural areas and analyzed for cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), nickel
