Sexing Galápagos penguins Spheniscus mendiculus by morphological measurements

open access: yesEndangered Species Research, 2018
The ability to identify the sex of individuals is essential in studies of ecology, behavior, and conservation, but reliable methods for sexing species that exhibit low sexual dimorphism are often time consuming or invasive.

Effects of Regulating Visitor Viewing Proximity and the Intensity of Visitor Behaviour on Little Penguin (Eudyptula minor) Behaviour and Welfare

open access: yesAnimals, 2019
We examined the effects of regulating the viewing proximity of visitors and the intensity of visitor behaviour on behaviours indicative of fear and stress physiology of 15 zoo-housed little penguins (Eudyptula minor).

Does foraging performance change with age in female little penguins (Eudyptula minor)? [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Age-related changes in breeding performance are likely to be mediated through changes in parental foraging performance. We investigated the relationship of foraging performance with age in female little penguins at Phillip Island, Australia, during the ...

Micromelia in Little Penguins (Eudyptula minor) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Avian Medicine and Surgery, 2006
Two cases of unilateral micromelia are described in wild juvenile little penguins (Eudyptula minor). The first bird was found at San Remo, Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia. The bird's left flipper was reduced in length, and radiography demonstrated severe shortening and dysplasia of the humerus.

Straight line foraging in yellow-eyed penguins: new insights into cascading fisheries effects and orientation capabilities of marine predators. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Free-ranging marine predators rarely search for prey along straight lines because dynamic ocean processes usually require complex search strategies.

The influence of locomotion on air-sac pressures in little penguins [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Biology, 2001
SUMMARYAir-sac pressures have been reported to oscillate with wing beat in flying magpies and with foot paddling in diving ducks. We sought to determine the impact on air-sac pressure of wing beats during swimming and of the step cycle during walking in little penguins (Eudyptula minor).

A Citizen Science Trial to Assess Perception of Wild Penguin Welfare

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science, 2021
Wild penguins are facing increased threats to their populations and their welfare as a consequence of human activities. Understanding the perception of animal welfare is essential to identify ethical concerns related to the negative impact of ...

New Miocene Fossils and the History of Penguins in Australia.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Australia has a fossil record of penguins reaching back to the Eocene, yet today is inhabited by just one breeding species, the little penguin Eudyptula minor.
