The chapter focuses on livable life, the curious concept engendered by the theory of performativity as the theory of agency. The main thesis of the whole section is that not all lives are livable. Some lives, varying historically and topographically, are unlivable because they are not qualified or counted as alive in the same way.

The sovereign still announces, ‘I am master of myself as of the universe’;1 the contemporary individual learns to manage his or her existence and feelings.
