A current assessment of liver abscesses should allow for better understanding of the pathogenesis of the disease and improve the effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment. Amebic liver abscess occurs more commonly than pyogenic liver abscess on a worldwide basis. However, in the United States, pyogenic liver abscess predominates.

Amebic liver abscess was seen in 35 patients over a ten-year period at Cook County and the University of Illinois hospitals, Chicago; 32 had immigrated from an area of endemic amebiasis, but three were natives of Chicago. Typically they had right upper-quadrant abdominal pain and fever of short duration (nine days); on physical examination, upper ...

AbstractExperience with 34 patients with pyogenic liver abscess is reviewed to evaluate the impact of percutaneous drainage and duration of antibiotic therapy on results of treatment. Patients with shock, adult respiratory distress syndrome, disseminated intravascular coagulation, jaundice, severe hypoalbuminemia, and diabetes had a poor prognosis ...

The percutaneous approach-specifically, ultrasound-guided percutaneous catheter drainage-associated with intravenous administration of antibiotics is the therapy of choice in patients with single or multiple pyogenic liver abscesses. The initial empiric antibiotic therapy should be modified based on results of blood and pus cultures.

Amebiasis is a widespread parasitic disease caused by Entamoeba histolytica. This protozoan organism is the third leading parasitic cause of death in the developing world and is an important health risk to travelers in endemic areas. Amebiasis most commonly results in asymptomatic colonization of the gastrointestinal tract, but some patients may ...

Pyogenic liver abscess is an important and often life-threatening disorder. It is commonly caused by underlying disease of the biliary system, but more frequently, no predisposing disorder can be identified. Its diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion and imaging of the liver.

Pyogenic liver abscess is a classic clinical entity whose presentation and management have evolved significantly with the advent of potent antimicrobials and the availability of improved diagnostic imaging. The classic triad of fever, upper right quadrant pain or fullness, and jaundice resulting from advanced pylephlebitis is now seldom seen.

We report eight cases of amebic liver abscess. All patients were men, and four were homosexual. Five of the eight patients had syphilis, but the four homosexual patients who were tested for HIV infection were negative. Ultrasonography (US), with or without needle aspiration, is the best method for diagnosing amebic liver abscess, and the treatment of ...

Tubercle, 1984
A 36-year-old patient presented with liver abscess, an unusual form of tuberculosis. Her clinical course was a perplexing one since the tuberculosis manifested as prolonged fever from an undefined source. Despite extensive investigations and triple antituberculosis chemotherapy her disease was refractory until surgical drainage was performed.
