Citizen science reveals host‐switching in louse flies and keds (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) during a period of anthropogenic change

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
A study of louse flies in the United Kingdom, Isle of Man, and Ireland found 212 different interactions between Hippoboscidae and their hosts, of which 70 were previously unrecorded. No louse flies were found on aquatic species of birds. Host‐switching to gulls (Laridae) has occurred during a period in which these species have started relying on ...

Exploring Associations of Different Types of Childhood Trauma With Symptomatology in Irritable Bowel Syndrome

open access: yesNeurogastroenterology &Motility, EarlyView.
The current cross‐sectional study aimed to elucidate the impact of different types of childhood trauma on IBS symptomatology. Our findings strongly support the significant role of childhood trauma in IBS pathology and indicate the specific relevance of emotional abuse influencing not only gastrointestinal symptoms but also extraintestinal and ...

Using herbarium collections to study genetic responses to global change

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Earth's c. 406 million herbarium specimens represent a largely untapped resource of genetic data that could transform our understanding of global plant populations. Advances in DNA sequencing have made the extraction of genetic data from these preserved specimens increasingly feasible, enabling new insights into plant biodiversity and ...

Cell cycle follows ‘pause and play’ mechanism in salt and cold stress recovery in diverse plant species

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Changes to organismal growth induced by environmental stress are orchestrated at the cellular level. These periods of stress may be followed by recovery periods, when plants have the opportunity to return to normal growth conditions. However, the cell cycle mechanisms underlying recovery are poorly understood.
