In this study, we tested whether white and yellow morphs of the common wall lizard (Podarcis muralis) adopt alternative strategies shaped by the immuno‐competence handicap hypotheses (ICHH). We found that testosterone‐induced immune suppression was stronger in white males, while aggression decreased in both morphs.

We performed 16S rDNA sequencing and metabolite profiling for three sympatric lizard species—Teratoscincus roborowskii, Phrynocephalus axillaris, and Eremias roborowskii—and compared their goblet cell and enzyme activities in the digestive tract. Our study suggests that the dietary niche may promote divergence or convergence of microbiota across host ...

Soil drought imposes moderate, temporary costs on a strictly fossorial amphisbaenian reptile. However, these animals seem to cope with, at least, moderately short droughts thanks to their peculiar adaptations to living in an underground environment. ABSTRACT The physiological traits of animals can be strongly influenced by climatic fluctuations, and ...

High altitudes are challenging for the animals that inhabit these environments. The Xizang plateau frog (Nanorana parkeri) survives in high‐altitude environments through a synergistic strategy of metabolic remodeling and protein expression adjustment to optimize energy efficiency and enhance cellular protection.

Integrating comparative spectrometry, image analysis, and thermal modeling, we reveal that (1) females optimize crypsis via background matching, (2) males prioritize high‐contrast disruptive patterning at a significant thermoregulatory cost (reduced solar heat gain), and (3) habitat‐specific monomorphism in Diploderma slowinskii underscores ecological ...
