ABSTRACT Woodblocks for printmaking are multi‐perspectival communicators inscribed with layered narratives. The artistic process of cutting excavates the surface of a woodblock, making visible lesser‐seen traces of the past, reflective of the practice of archaeology.

Dollo’s law of irreversibility states that once a complex trait has been lost in evolution, it cannot be regained. It is thought that complex epistatic interactions and developmental constraints impede the re-emergence of such a trait.

Embryonic radial glia (RG) generate neurons, glial cells, and later adult neural stem cells, which sustain adult neurogenesis (top, left to right). Human‐specific genetic modifications (blue arrow), selected to boost early RG neurogenic activity, may lead to premature RG exhaustion and reduced adult neurogenesis in the human brain (bottom).

Abstract Background While heart function is broadly conserved across vertebrates, the cellular phenotype of muscle cells (cardiomyocytes) varies across taxa and throughout ontogeny.
