We develop a heuristic for a problem motivated by the loading of aircraft or trucks: pack blocks into a bin so that their center-of-gravity is as close as possible to a target point. Our heuristic either produces good solutions or else signals that none is possible.

This chapter has been developed from that authored by Dr M. J. Ryall in the 1st edition published in 2000, much of which remains applicable to bridges today. While permanent dead load and superimposed dead loads are covered, it deals primarily with the intensity and application of the transient loads on bridge structures according to European, British ...

Load, Load Monitoring, and Load Reduction
2016The project Probabilistic Load Description, Monitoring and Reduction of the Loads on Future Offshore Wind Turbines(OWEA Loads) builds on the preceding project Verification of Offshore Wind Turbines. In this project, the evaluation of extensive data material aims to achieve the load-compliant and reliable design and operation of offshore wind turbines ...

Pile Load Tests: Cyclic Loads and Varying Load Rates
Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division, 1981Two series of axial load tests were performed on four 14-in. (356-mm) diam, open-end, steel pipe piles at an interval of about 320 days. Pile lengths of 40 ft or 50 ft (12.2 or 15.2 m) were installed below conductors driven to depths ranging from 115 ft to 320 ft (35 m to 98 m) into a strong underconsolidated clay. Each pile was subjected to as many as

Nanocarriers and Their Loading Strategies
Advanced Healthcare Materials, 2018Nanocarriers are of paramount significance for drug delivery and nanomedicine technology. Given the imperfect systems and nonideal therapeutic effects, there are works to be done in synthesis as much as in biological studies, if not more so. Building the

Load Aggregation From Generation-Follows-Load to Load-Follows-Generation: Residential Loads
IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2017The growing interest in optimizing the generation, distribution, and delivery of electric power have motivated the implementation of several smart grid functions in many power systems around the globe. Among such functions are the peak-load management, demand response, direct load control, and integration of distributed power generation.

Loaded: Server Load Balancing for IPv6
International conference on Networking and Services (ICNS'06), 2006With the next generation Internet protocol IPv6 at the horizon, it is time to think about how applications can migrate to IPv6. Web traffic is currently one of the most important applications in the Internet. The increasing popularity of dynamically generated content on the World Wide Web, has created the need for fast web servers.

We tend to assume that all genetic variation is good: the higher the variation in a population, the more diverse its gene pool, the more secure its future. Unfortunately, the relationship between genetic variation and survival of a population or a species is more complex.

Probability Based Load Criteria: Load Factors and Load Combinations
Journal of the Structural Division, 1982This is the second of two papers that describe a study conducted to develop probability-based load factors and load combinations suitable for use with common construction materials and technologies. In the second phase of the study, described in this paper, the checking equation format for the proposed load criteria was selected, and the load factors ...
