A comparison of two fishery-independent survey programs used to define the population structure of American lobster (Homarus americanus) in the Gulf of Maine [PDF]
The population structure and abundance of the American lobster (Homarus americanus) stock in the Gulf of Maine are defined by data derived from a fishery-independent trawl survey program conducted by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).

Mechanisms underlying the production of carapace vibrations and associated waterborne sounds in the American lobster, Homarus americanus [PDF]
American lobsters produce carapace vibrations, which also lead to waterborne acoustic signals, by simultaneously contracting the antagonistic remotor and promotor muscles located at the base of the second antenna.

Early evolutionary history of the seed
ABSTRACT The seed is an essential stage in the life history of gymnospermous and angiospermous plants, facilitating both their survival and dispersal. We reappraise knowledge of the evolutionary history of the gymnospermous seed, from its origin in the late Devonian through to the well‐known end‐Permian extinctions – an interval encompassing the ...

The slipper lobster, Scyllarides latus, uses apatite and fluorapatite to protect its sensory organules [PDF]
The cuticle of arthropods has been intensely studied not only to better understand the properties of a natural composite material, but also to understand how structural properties and mineral contributions to this composite offer a durable protective ...

High Pressure Stabilizes the Elusive Hexacoordinated Carbon
The MCF6 species (M = Ca, Sr) is more stable than the bicomponent MF2…CF4 mixture in the solid‐state at high pressure (p > 400 GPa). The main building block is the [CF6]2− unit in which carbon is hexacoordinated. Unusually high coordination number for elements has been of great interest in chemistry.

Isoelectronic Alloying in Zintl Phases Mediated the Avoided Crossing and Phonon Softening
A small amount of Hf doping endows Zr3Ni3Sb4‐Zintl with an unusually low thermal conductivity far exceeding that of similar systems. Two unique phonon mechanisms—avoided crossing and phonon softening—significantly suppress the lattice thermal conductivity. The average thermoelectric figure of merit is improved by 21%.

Modelling deep water habitats to develop a spatially explicit, fine scale understanding of the distribution of the western rock lobster, Panulirus cygnus. [PDF]
BACKGROUND: The western rock lobster, Panulirus cygnus, is endemic to Western Australia and supports substantial commercial and recreational fisheries. Due to and its wide distribution and the commercial and recreational importance of the species a key ...

A novel brand‐new co‐firing slow solidification process has been used to prepare Cs3Cu2I5: In single crystals (SCs), which demonstrate record‐breaking X‐ray detection performance. The regular‐shaped Cs3Cu2I5: In wafer obtains a high light yield (74 368 Ph MeV−1), which is the highest related to indium‐doped Cu‐based perovskites.
