AI & Society, 1999This paper addresses the questions of whether and, if so, how and to what extent the Internet brings about homogenisation of local cultures in the world. It examines a particular case, that of Thai culture, through an investigation and interpretation of a Usenet newsgroup, soc.culture.thai. Two threads of discussion in the newsgroup are selected.

In Wasambaa culture, people live collectively and support family members regardless of a disability. People in this culture believe that children with a disability are a gift from God, regardless of whether that is Muslim, Christian God. Nevertheless, negative beliefs existed in the past and still persist within the community.

Leisure Studies, 1993A number of local authorities have, in the last ten years, built or subsidized venues for rock and pop concerts. Previously, such ventures were left to the private sector. This article explores the reasons for this local state involvement, and draws attention to its importance for the study of leisure in general, and popular music in particular.
