Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Classifying the Course of Alzheimer's Disease with Brain MR Images and a Method Based on Three-Dimensional Local Pattern Transformation

open access: yesChinese Journal of Magnetic Resonance, 2019
A classification method was developed to differentiate cognitive normal controls (CN), mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients and Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients from the magnetic resonance (MR) image data.

Coherence Enhancement Based on Recursive Anisotropic Scale-Space with Adaptive Kernels

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
The reduction of unnecessary details is important in a variety of imaging tasks. Image denoising can be generally formulated as a diffusion process that iteratively suppresses undesirable image features with high variance.

Non-local Attention Optimized Deep Image Compression

open access: yes, 2019
This paper proposes a novel Non-Local Attention Optimized Deep Image Compression (NLAIC) framework, which is built on top of the popular variational auto-encoder (VAE) structure.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Vehicle Detection in Still Images by Using Boosted Local Feature Detector

open access: yesJournal of Measurement Science and Instrumentation, 2010
Vehicle detection in still images is a comparatively difficult task. This paper presents a method for this task by using boosted local pattern detector constructed from two local features including Haar-like and oriented gradient features. The whole ...

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Infrared laser sampling of low volumes combined with shotgun lipidomics reveals lipid markers in palatine tonsil carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Nanosecond infrared laser (NIRL) low‐volume sampling combined with shotgun lipidomics uncovers distinct lipidome alterations in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) of the palatine tonsil. Several lipid species consistently differentiate tumor from healthy tissue, highlighting their potential as diagnostic markers.
