The American Journal of Surgery, 2008 PTEN is a tumor-suppressor gene located on chromosome 10. Deficient PTEN expression leads to activation of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt (pAkt) signaling pathway, which may contribute to multiple human cancers. The relation between PTEN expression and Akt activation is still unclear in colorectal cancers and adenomatous polyps.

Whereas the first tumor was an unusually large malignant insulinoma, the second (or recurrent) tumor was a non-functioning islet-cell tumor.
