Local Scour at Piled Bridge Foundations

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1998
An experimental study of local scour around rectangular bridge piers founded on two circular cylindrical piles, where the piles are exposed as a result of scouring, is presented. The problem is the interaction of two widths (pier and piles) if the interface is set at different elevations with respect to the bed.

Similarity Laws for Localized Scour

Journal of the Hydraulics Division, 1966
The object of this study is to develop similarity criteria for sediment-transport rate and for scour depth in localized-scour situations. The principal assumption is that in an area of localized scour, the velocity and velocity distribution are the results of the disturbance element around which scour was occurring.

Local scour at open-channel junctions

Journal of Hydraulic Research, 2010
High bed-shear stress resulting from secondary flows and velocity increase at a channel junction cause local erosion and deposition in natural rivers and earth-lined channels. Herein, the scour patterns at the junction of two loose bed channels were studied under clear-water conditions.

Local scour around spur-dikes

Journal of Hydrology, 1983
Abstract Experimental investigations were conducted to study the effects of upstream flow conditions, sediment characteristics, and spur-dike's geometry on the maximum scour depth and scour pattern around a spur-dike. Dimensional analyses to find different non-dimensional terms affecting the phenomenon were obtained and verified with the help of the ...

Local Scour Downstream of Hydraulic Structures

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1995
An analysis of the problem of local scour downstream of hydraulic structures is presented here. This paper briefly discusses the functional design of the bed protection downstream of large hydraulic structures. Phases of the scour process and transport mechanism are treated in an introductory manner.

Local Scour at Bridge Abutments

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1992
Laboratory data for local scour depth at bridge abutments are presented. These include sufficient data to demonstrate the effects on scour depth of abutment length, flow depth, and abutment shape and alignment. In addition, some data for the effects of sediment characteristics, flow intensity, and approach channel geometry are given.

Local Scour Downstream of an Apron

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1985
Measurements have been made of the rate of scour downstream of a rigid apron due to a jet of water issuing through a sluice opening. Experiments are carried out for various sand sizes, sluice openings, efflux velocities, and lengths of apron. Mean velocity profiles in rigid models simulating the shape of the scour hole are studied in detail.

Local and Contraction Scour at Bridge Abutments

Building Partnerships, 2000
In most experimental studies on erosion at bridge piers and abutments, the value of the blockage ratio b/B between the transversal obstacle dimension and the flume width is kept as small as possible (typically b/B b is not small compared to B so that the average acceleration due to contraction is expected to increase the scour effects of the ...

Model Studies on Local Scour

1984
The problem of local scour appears deceptively simple at the first sight, but continues to defy attempts of a rational solution. Due to the complex nature of the problem and a large number of variables involved a purely theoretical approach has been extremely difficult.

Local scour in waterway docks

2023
The investigation of flow intensity is crucial in understanding the ship propeller jet scouring process in ship manoeuvring areas, waterways path, and navigation channels. Although still water conditions are often used in studies, they do not accurately represent real‐life scenarios.
