Log-log Convexity of Type-Token Growth in Zipf's Systems

open access: yes, 2014
It is traditionally assumed that Zipf's law implies the power-law growth of the number of different elements with the total number of elements in a system - the so-called Heaps' law.

Quantitative computed tomographic descriptors associate tumor shape complexity and intratumor heterogeneity with prognosis in lung adenocarcinoma. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Two CT features were developed to quantitatively describe lung adenocarcinomas by scoring tumor shape complexity (feature 1: convexity) and intratumor density variation (feature 2: entropy ratio) in routinely obtained diagnostic CT scans.

The $q$-log-convexity of Domb's polynomials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In this paper, we prove the $q$-log-convexity of Domb's polynomials, which was conjectured by Sun in the study of Ramanujan-Sato type series for powers of $\pi$. As a result, we obtain the log-convexity of Domb's numbers.

Laser Engineering of HfN‐Based Nanoparticles for Safe NIR‐I Photothermal and X‐ray Enhancing Cancer Therapies

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, we produced HfN‐based nanoparticles via femtosecond laser ablation in acetone. The nanoparticles exhibit a red‐shifted plasmonic resonance in the NIR‐I window, colloidal stability after coating with polyethyleneglycol, and excellent biocompatibility. The photothermal and X‐ray sensitization therapeutic effects were demonstrated for tumor

On the Monotonicity and Log-Convexity of a Four-Parameter Homogeneous Mean

open access: yesJournal of Inequalities and Applications, 2008
A four-parameter homogeneous mean 𝐅(p,q;r,s;a,b) is defined by another approach. The criterion of its monotonicity and logarithmically convexity is presented, and three refined chains of inequalities for two-parameter mean values are deduced which

Shaping of Biohybrid Functional Living Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates a strategy for shaping living mycelium into functional materials by directing its natural growth. Nanoparticles armor hyphae, micron‐scale particles entangle within the network, and printed hydrogel architectures steer expansion, creating defined geometries.

Positive semi-definite matrices, exponential convexity for multiplicative majorization and related means of Cauchy's type

open access: yesJournal of Numerical Analysis and Approximation Theory, 2010
In this paper, we obtain new results concerning the generalizations of additive and multiplicative majorizations by means of exponential convexity. We prove positive semi-definiteness of matrices generated by differences deduced from majorization type ...

On the $q$-log-convexity conjecture of Sun [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In his study of Ramanujan-Sato type series for $1/\pi$, Sun introduced a sequence of polynomials $S_n(q)$ as given by $$S_n(q)=\sum\limits_{k=0}^n{n\choose k}{2k\choose k}{2(n-k)\choose n-k}q^k,$$ and he conjectured that the polynomials $S_n(q)$ are $q ...

Optimal Gabor frame bounds for separable lattices and estimates for Jacobi theta functions

open access: yes, 2016
We study sharp frame bounds of Gabor frames with the standard Gaussian window and prove that the square lattice optimizes both the lower and the upper frame bound among all rectangular lattices.

Engineering Strategies for Stable and Long‐Life Alkaline Zinc‐Based Flow Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Alkaline zinc‐based flow batteries face persistent challenges from unstable zinc deposition, including dendrite growth, passivation, corrosion, and hydrogen evolution, which severely limit cycling stability. Current research addresses these issues through coordinated electrode structuring, electrolyte regulation, and membrane design to control zinc ...
