Selective Logging Costs Less

Journal of Forestry, 1939
Abstract Accelerated by a growing public consciousness for more conservative methods in the harvesting of timber crops, the selective form of cutting has received favorable and valuable publicity. Of necessity public definition of the method has been given in terms of values which might be achievedrather than in terms of problems ...

Prebunching to Reduce Helicopter Logging Costs

Journal of Forestry, 1978
Abstract This paper describes one effort to quantify rates and costs of helicopter production for thinning young-growth Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) in Oregon. The logs in a small sale (21 acres) were skidded to landings within the sale area by horses (prebunching), and then flown about 2,400 feet across a steep canyon by ...

The cost of checkpointing, logging and recovery for the mobile agent systems

2002 Pacific Rim International Symposium on Dependable Computing, 2002. Proceedings., 2003
The reliable execution of a mobile agent is a very important design issue to build a mobile agent system and many fault-tolerant schemes have been proposed. Hence, we present the experimental evaluation of the performance of the fault-tolerant schemes for the mobile agent environment.

CLog: Low Cost Gigabit Full Packet Logging

Journal of Communications, 2006
Creating high quality network trace files is a difficult task to accomplish on a limited budget. High network speeds may overburden an individual system running packet logging software such as tcpdump, resulting in trace files with missing information and making analysis difficult or incomplete.

ANALYSIS OF PRAM INSTRUCTION SETS FROM A LOG COST PERSPECTIVE

International Journal of Foundations of Computer Science, 1994
The log cost measure has been viewed as a more reasonable method of measuring the time complexity of an algorithm than the unit cost measure. The more widely used unit cost measure becomes unrealistic if the algorithm handles extremely large integers. Parallel machines have not been examined under the log cost measure.

EFFECTS OF SILVICULTURAL PRACTICES ON LOGGING COSTS

Australian Forestry, 1966
SUMMARY A plea is made for more consideration by plantation managers of the effect of various practices on logging costs. It is pointed out that logging costs normally exceed growing costs and that some substantial savings in logging costs can be achieved by making heavier and fewer thinnings.

Low-Cost Garbage Collection for Causal Message Logging

2001
This paper presents two garbage collection schemes for causal message logging with independent checkpointing. The first scheme allows each process to autonomously remove useless log information in its storage by piggybacking only some additional information without requiring any extra message and forced checkpoint. The second scheme enables the process

Avoiding Two Errors in Estimating Logging Costs

Transactions of the ASAE, 1983
ABSTRACT REGRESSION equations are often used to predict logging production rates and costs. However, using the midrange value of each independent variable as its average value in the regression produces an incorrect estimate of the dependent variable mean if the regression has nonlinear terms or if the independent variable has a nonsymmetrical (skewed)
