Ion and water balance in the feeding lone star tick

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A, Physiology, 1975
Abstract 1. The water content % in the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum (L.), increased to 69·0 at the beginning of the bloodmeal, then decreased to 63·3 with the onset of rapid engorgement and decreased further to 57·5 prior to and just after completion of engorgement. 2. The concentration of sodium in host blood was higher than in the

The effects of desiccation and rehydration on the lone star tick

Journal of Insect Physiology, 1973
Abstract This study describes the effects of desiccation and rehydration on the water content, haemolymph volume (per cent), osmolarity, and concentrations of Na, K, Mg, and Ca in the haemolymph of the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum . The water content percentages of ‘severely desiccated’, ‘moderately’ and ‘fully hydrated’ ticks were 46·0, 52·

Biosynthesis of salivary prostaglandins in the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum

Insect Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 1995
Dopamine-induced saliva from ticks fed [3H]arachidonic acid contained the radiolabelled prostaglandins E2, F2 alpha, D2, and B2, the latter probably derived from PGE2 owing to the alkalinity of tick saliva. Prostaglandin synthetase (PGS) activity in the salivary gland homogenate from the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, could not be detected by ...

2,6-Dichilorophenol, Sex Pheromone of the Lone Star Tick

Science, 1972
The compound 2,6-dichlorophenol was identified from female lone star ticks, Amblyomma americanum , and is believed to be a sex pheromone of this arthropod. The natural occurrence of a chlorinated organic compound in a land animal is new. The presence of similar compounds of exogenous origin is common in animals, but

Identification of Hemolytic Activity in Saliva of the Lone Star Tick (Acari: Ixodidae)

Journal of Medical Entomology, 1997
Hemolytic activity was identified in the saliva of Amblyomma americanum (L.) when red blood cells from sheep were incubated with tick saliva in the presence of phosphatidylcholine and sodium deoxycholate. The hemolytic activity was destroyed by boiling or treating with trypsin.
