Effects of changing mosquito host searching behaviour on the cost effectiveness of a mass distribution of long-lasting, insecticidal nets: a modelling study [PDF]

open access: yesMalaria Journal, 2013
The effectiveness of long-lasting, insecticidal nets (LLINs) in preventing malaria is threatened by the changing biting behaviour of mosquitoes, from nocturnal and endophagic to crepuscular and exophagic, and by their increasing resistance to insecticides.Using epidemiological stochastic simulation models, we studied the impact of a mass LLIN ...

Evaluation of the long-lasting insecticidal net Interceptor LN: laboratory and experimental hut studies against anopheline and culicine mosquitoes in northeastern Tanzania [PDF]

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2013
Long lasting insecticidal nets (LN) are a primary method of malaria prevention. Before new types of LN are approved they need to meet quality and efficacy standards set by the WHO Pesticide Evaluation Scheme. The process of evaluation has three phases. In Phase I the candidate LN must meet threshold bioassay criteria after 20 standardized washes.

Evaluation of Olyset™ insecticide-treated nets distributed seven years previously in Tanzania [PDF]

open access: yesMalaria Journal, 2004
Background Insecticide-treated nets represent currently a key malaria control strategy, but low insecticide re-treatment rates remain problematic. Olyset™ nets are currently one of two long-lasting insecticidal nets recommended by WHO.

An experimental hut evaluation of Olyset® nets against anopheline mosquitoes after seven years use in Tanzanian villages [PDF]

open access: yesMalaria Journal, 2008
Background Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are advocated by WHO for protection against malaria. Of the three brands of LLINs currently approved by WHO, Olyset® is the only one currently granted full recommendation.

Evaluation of KO-Tab 1-2-3®: a wash-resistant 'dip-it-yourself' insecticide formulation for long-lasting treatment of mosquito nets [PDF]

open access: yesMalaria Journal, 2005
Abstract Introduction Insecticide-treated nets (ITN) are an important method of preventing malaria. To remain effective, they need to be re-treated with pyrethroid insecticide at approximately yearly intervals. Systems for re-treating nets in Africa are limited, and the vast majority of nets in use have never been ...

Effects of long-lasting insecticidal nets and zooprophylaxis on mosquito feeding behaviour and density in Mwea, central Kenya [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Vector Borne Diseases, 2009
Background & objectives: Zooprophylaxis is a strategy that can control malaria by attractingmosquitoes to domestic animals that act as dead-end hosts. The objective of this study was toestablish the effects of zooprophylaxis and long-lasting insecticidal

To assess whether addition of pyriproxyfen to long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets increases their durability compared to standard long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial. [PDF]

open access: yesTrials, 2015

Control of pyrethroid and DDT-resistant Anopheles gambiae by application of indoor residual spraying or mosquito nets treated with a long-lasting organophosphate insecticide, chlorpyrifos-methyl [PDF]

open access: yesMalaria Journal, 2010
Scaling up of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) with support from the Global Fund and President's Malaria Initiative is providing increased opportunities for malaria control in Africa. The most cost-effective and longest-lasting residual insecticide DDT is also the most environmentally persistent.

The importance of considering community-level effects when selecting insecticidal malaria vector products [PDF]

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2011
Background Insecticide treatment of nets, curtains or walls and ceilings of houses represent the primary means for malaria prevention worldwide. Direct personal protection of individuals and households arises from deterrent and insecticidal activities ...

The impact of mass drug administration and long-lasting insecticidal net distribution on Wuchereria bancrofti infection in humans and mosquitoes: an observational study in northern Uganda [PDF]

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2011
