Affordable and Clean Energy: CO2 Emissions, Resilience and Inequality

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Sustainable development means building the resilience of both people and the planet. It includes implementing strategies which reduce emissions while also enabling more vulnerable households to transition to clean and affordable energy. This paper examines household CO2 emissions in Ireland to highlight those who emit most and least in key ...

Does washing insecticide-treated nets 20 times for experimental hut evaluations provide a suitable proxy for their end-of-life performance under household conditions?

open access: yesParasites & Vectors
Background Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are washed 20 times as part of experimental hut trials to simulate the loss of active ingredient (AI) occurring over their intended 3-year lifespan and estimate insecticidal durability.

Cyanogenic Compounds, Physicochemical Parameters and Metals in Water From Cassava Processing Areas: A Study in the Brazilian Amazon, Using Multivariate Analysis

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study evaluated the water quality of artesian wells and effluents generated in cassava processing in a rural area of Bragança, Pará, with emphasis on physicochemical parameters, multielement composition, and cyanogenic compounds. The well water presented specific nonconformities, highlighting pH values below the recommended level and high

Multiscale Effects of Environmentally Relevant Mixtures Containing Two Estrogenic Endocrine Disruptors, Chlordecone and Propylparaben, in Hydra vulgaris Pallas, 1766

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study investigates the chronic effects of chlordecone (CLD) and propylparaben (PP), two pro‐estrogenic endocrine disruptors, on Hydra vulgaris Pallas, 1766 using a multiscale approach over a 14‐day exposure period. Environmentally relevant concentrations of CLD (0.5, 5, 20 μg L−1) and PP (0.01, 0.05, 0.40 μg L−1) were tested individually ...

Interactions between prairie dogs and arthropods in grassland ecosystems: a review and research gaps

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.) are an important component of grassland ecosystems of North America where they can alter vegetation composition/structure and physical attributes of grassland habitats through their feeding and burrowing behavior. Impacts of prairie dog presence on many wildlife and plant taxa have been widely studied but research on prairie

Does Chemical Use Mitigate or Exacerbate Production Risk? Evidence From Conventional Maize Farms in Northern Italy

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper examines the relationships between chemical use, namely fertilisers and pesticides, and the production risk of conventional maize in Northern Italy. Using data from the Italian Farm Accountancy Data Network for the period 2015–2020, merged with a station‐based weather dataset, we analyse the production risk through moments of farm ...

AGRICULTURE IN A SOCIALIST CITY: Towards an Alter‐Urban Political Ecology

open access: yesInternational Journal of Urban and Regional Research, EarlyView.
Abstract Urban political ecology has developed as a critique of capitalist urbanization. This article develops the concept of alter‐urban political ecology to define urban environments emerging not from capitalist urbanization but from efforts to transform it. Drawing on archival research and ethnographic fieldwork in five urban farms in socialist Cuba,

Russian wheat aphid: a model for genomic plasticity and a challenge to breeders

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Invasive foundress finds suitable habitat and reproduces through pathogenesis. Wingless females produce life offspring quickly, which leads to high population densities. High population densities result in competition, which may induce epigenetic changes and wing development for dispersal.

Behavioural responses of peach potato aphid, Myzus persicae Sulzer (Hemiptera: Aphididae), to entomopathogenic fungi infected conspecifics

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, EarlyView.
Myzus persicae showed no detectable behavioural response to Beauveria bassiana‐colonised agar alone. Aphids spent significantly more time in odour fields containing EPF‐infected conspecifics than healthy aphids, agar or blank air. EPF infection may alter host‐associated odours, suggesting pathogen‐mediated cues could influence aphid behaviour and ...

Climatic factors, landscape composition and host plant traits co‐drive fruit infestation of unmanaged walnut trees by the invasive pest fly Rhagoletis completa (Cresson, 1929) (Diptera: Tephritidae)

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, EarlyView.
The study examined multiscale factors influencing walnut fruit infestations by the invasive pest fly Rhagoletis completa. Infestation rates increased with fruit size, host tree abundance, grasslands, hedgerows and temperatures, but decreased with anthropogenic habitats and heavy spring rainfall.
