All-optical switching in long-period fiber gratings
Optics Letters, 1997Nonlinear pulse propagation in long-period fiber gratings is studied with a mode-locked Q -switched laser pulse approximately 80ps in duration at a wavelength of 1.05 microm . Optical switching, pulse reshaping, and optical limiting are found at intensities in the range of 1-20 GW/cm(2).

Dispersion control with use of long-period fiber gratings
Journal of the Optical Society of America A: Optics and Image Science, and Vision, 2000Chirped long-period fiber gratings are analyzed for management of dispersion in optical fiber communications systems. A ray model is used to derive simple analytic expressions that describe the transmission, chromatic delay, and dispersion properties of chirped long-period fiber gratings. A numerical model based on coupled-mode theory is used to verify

Long-period fiber gratings based on periodic microbends
Optics Letters, 1999We demonstrate a new type of high-performance long-period fiber grating based on arc-induced periodic microbends. The fabrication method is simple and does not require special fibers. Flexibility in controlling the filter parameters makes it possible to produce arbitrary filter profiles by use of a simple apodization technique, which is difficult to do

Tunable mechanically induced long-period fiber gratings
Optics Letters, 2000We report the experimental characterization of mechanically induced long-period fiber gratings (LPFG's) made by pressing a plate with periodic grooves against a short length of fiber. This filter, which is simple and inexpensive, exhibits transmission spectra and temperature stability similar to those of photoinduced LPFG's.

Optical fiber long-period grating sensors
Optics Letters, 1996We present a novel class of highly sensitive sensors based on long-period fiber gratings that can be implemented with simple and inexpensive demodulation schemes. Temperature, strain, and refractive-index resolutions of 0.65 degrees C, 65.75 micro, and 7.69 x 10(-5), respectively, are demonstrated for gratings fabricated in standard telecommunication ...
