Long-period fiber gratings based on periodic microbends

Optics Letters, 1999
We demonstrate a new type of high-performance long-period fiber grating based on arc-induced periodic microbends. The fabrication method is simple and does not require special fibers. Flexibility in controlling the filter parameters makes it possible to produce arbitrary filter profiles by use of a simple apodization technique, which is difficult to do

Electronically reconfigurable superimposed waveguide long-period gratings

Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 2002
The perturbation to the refractive index induced by a periodic electric field from two systems of interdigitated electrodes with the electrode-finger period l is analyzed for a waveguide with an electro-optically (EO) active core-cladding. It is shown that the electric field induces two superimposed transmissive refractive-index gratings with different

Cascaded long-period gratings with nanostructured coatings

Optics Letters, 2005
The response of the transmission spectrum of cascaded long period gratings (LPGs) to the deposition of nanostructured coatings by use of the Langmuir-Blodgett technique is investigated. The phase of the interference fringes within the LPGs' attenuation bands is shown to be highly sensitive to the optical thickness of the coating, for thicknesses of the

Long-period fiber gratings

Bragg Gratings, Photosensitivity, and Poling in Glass Fibers and Waveguides: Applications and Fundamentals, 1997
Long period fiber gratings that couple light from guided core modes to non-guided cladding modes provide a means of introducing wavelength dependent losses in optical fiber systems.1 As a result, these in-fiber devices have found use as gain-equalizers in broadband optical fiber amplifiers,2 as band-rejection filters in high-power cascaded Raman fiber ...

Long-period-grating waveguide filters

2003 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (CLEO/Europe 2003) (IEEE Cat. No.03TH8666), 2004
This paper reports the fabrication of long period grating (LPG) filters in ion-exchanged BK7-glass waveguides and benzocyclobutene (BCB) polymer waveguides to show that LPG filters can be fabricated with different techniques and materials. The structure of corrugated LPG and its normalised transmission spectrum is analysed.

Polymeric long-period waveguide gratings

IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2003
A long-period waveguide grating (LPWG) was demonstrated in a polymeric waveguide fabricated on an SiO/sub 2/-Si substrate using standard cleanroom fabrication processes: ultraviolet photolithography and reactive ion etching. Experimental results confirm that the relationship between the transmission peak wavelength and the grating period is linear. The

Ultra-long-period fiber gratings

Proceedings 27th European Conference on Optical Communication (Cat. No.01TH8551), 2002
We report here for the first time the fabrication and characterisation of long period fiber gratings with periods of several millimetres. The resonant loss peaks of these gratings are generated from the coupling of the forward propagating guided core mode to the cladding modes of fundamental and harmonic orders.

Discretized superimposed optical fiber long-period gratings

Optics Letters, 2020
A novel technique, to the best of our knowledge, for the inscription of superimposed long-period gratings with arbitrary grating pitches is proposed and experimentally validated. The technique is based on the discretization of an ideal continuous sinusoidal refractive index (RI) pattern with a step function.

Reliability of long-period gratings

OFC '98. Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibit. Technical Digest. Conference Edition. 1998 OSA Technical Digest Series Vol.2 (IEEE Cat. No.98CH36177), 2002
Summary form only given. Ever since their conception in 1996, long-period gratings (LPGs) have come to be used in a wide variety of applications. LPGs involve coupling of core and cladding modes. The importance of thermal stabilization techniques for successful use of Bragg gratings is now well acknowledged. This is even more important in LPGs, because
