Can portunid crabs protect massive coral against the attack by long-spined sea urchins?

Regional Studies in Marine Science, 2020
Abstract Sea urchin grazing can damage corals, but little is known how such damage can be remediated. We conducted three caging experiments in the field to determine the relationships among the portunid crab Thalamita prymna, the long-spined sea urchin Diadema setosum and the massive coral Platygyra carnosa.

Trimetallic PdCuIr with long-spined sea-urchin-like morphology for ambient electroreduction of nitrogen to ammonia†

Journal of Materials Chemistry A, 2019
A one-step method is proposed to synthesize long-spined sea-urchin-like PdCuIr nanostructures for electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction to ammonia.

Nickel and Copper Toxicity to Embryos of the Long-Spined Sea Urchin, Diadema savignyi

Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 2015
The sensitivity of long-spined sea urchins (Diadema savignyi) collected from Guam (Northern Marianas Islands), USA, to nickel and copper in seawater was explored using 48-h embryo-larval development toxicity tests. The median effective concentrations (EC50) averaged 94 µg L(-1) for nickel, and 19 µg L(-1) from a single exposure to copper, and suggest ...

The role of algal chemical defenses in the feeding preferences of the long-spined sea urchin Diadema antillarum

Aquatic Ecology, 2021
The 1983 die-off of the long-spined sea urchin Diadema antillarum was linked to dramatic increases in macroalgal biomass and abundance on Caribbean coral reefs. D. antillarum densities have only recently begun to recover, and on some reefs this has led to a decrease in algae and an increase in coral recruits.

Establishing a Diagnostic Technique for Coelomocentesis in the Long-Spined Sea Urchin Diadema antillarum

Journal of Aquatic Animal Health, 2018
Abstract Coelomic fluid aspiration has been utilized in echinoderms in research and clinical settings. Detailed procedural descriptions for coelomic fluid sampling in sea urchins (class Echinoidea) are lacking, and samples are prone to contamination.

Effects of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid on growth and survival of long-spined sea urchin Diadema antillarum larvae

North American Journal of Aquaculture, 2023
Abstract Objective The presence of heavy metals in seawater is a major challenge for hatchery culture of sea urchin larvae due to their sensitivity to metal pollution. The impact of heavy metals in seawater for sensitive marine larviculture could be minimized via chelation of metals using ...

Purification and biochemical characterization of a cellulase from the digestive organs of the short-spined sea urchin Strongylocentrotus intermedius [PDF]

open access: yesFisheries Science, 2012
We isolated a cellulase from the digestive organs of the short-spined sea urchin Strogylocentrotus intermedius using a combination of ion-exchange chromatography and gel filtration together with an assay for carboxymethylcellulase activity.

Cellular responses of the long-spined sea urchin ( Diadema antillarum-a ) (160.9)

The Journal of Immunology, 2012
Abstract The long-spined sea urchin (Diadema antillarum-a) began dying on coral reefs near the Panama Canal in 1983, and over the next year they virtually disappeared from the Caribbean Sea. Present evidence suggests that a water-borne pathogen was responsible.
