‘Prickly problems’ on Australian reefs: comparative ecology and management of crown-of-thorns starfish and long-spined sea urchins

open access: yesMarine and Freshwater Research
Context Overabundant echinoderms can dramatically alter reefs, with this problem being exemplified along Australia’s coast, with recurrent outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish (CoTS) (Acanthaster cf. solaris) on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) and high densities of long-spined sea urchins (Centrostephanus ...

The effect of herbivory by the long-spined sea urchin, Diadema savignyi, on algae growth in the coral reefs of Moorea, French Polynesia

open access: yes, 2008
THE EFFECT OF HERBIVORY BY THE LONG-SPINED SEA URCHIN, DIADEMA SAVIGNYI, ON ALGAE GROWTH IN THE CORAL REEFS OF MOOREA, FRENCH POLYNESIA Herbivory plays an important role in shaping coral reef community structure. Herbivores consume algae on the reef, helping to prevent coral dominated reefs from 'phase shifting' to algae dominated ones.

Diversity of long-spined sea urchins (Diadema spp.) in the Indo-Malay archipelago [PDF]

open access: yes

Restoring caribbean reefs, one spine at a time : The culture and rearing of the long-spined sea urchin, Diadema antillarum for restocking

open access: yes
Tropical coral reefs are under serious threat, especially in the Caribbean, where hard coral cover has dropped sharply in recent decades. A major reason is the loss of natural grazers that keep algae and seaweed in check. One key grazer, the long-spined sea urchin (Diadema antillarum), has nearly disappeared due to two recent disease events.

Diver Control of Long-spined Sea Urchin in Tasmania

open access: yes, 2022
An urchin fishery was established to provide financial incentives to control a range-extending and destructive urchin species. Spatially discrete subsidies and modified harvesting strategies were used to manage and optimise harvests efforts, with ...

Emerging marine pollutants: metal nanoparticles and sea urchin coelomocytes immune response.

open access: yes, 2011
Harmful effects of metal nanoparticles (NPs) on marine organisms is becoming a hot topic and a major environmental concern, as sea water superficial sediments represent the ultimate sink for these emerging contaminants.

POPULATION DYNAMICS AND SPATIAL ANALYSIS OF THE MAINE GREEN SEA URCHIN (STRONGYLOCENTROTUS DROEBACHIENSIS) FISHERY BY

open access: yes, 2003
Fisheries research on the green sea urchin in Maine has been limited despite its importance to the state's fishing industry. The objective of this thesis was to generate critical information for the management and monitoring of the Maine green sea ...
