This chapter motivates—and offers recipes for valuing—a unique type of life annuity that is contingent on the performance of a stock market index or portfolio. It is christened a ruin-contingent life annuity (RCLA), a contingent claim that is also the foundation of all variable annuities (VAs) with guaranteed withdrawal benefits.
