Mechanics of longitudinal cracks in tooth enamel
Acta Biomaterialia, 2011A study is made of longitudinal "channel" cracking in tooth enamel from axial compressive loading. The cracks simulate those generated in the molar and premolar teeth of humans and animals by natural tooth function. Contact loading tests are made on extracted human molars with hard and soft indenting plates to determine the evolution of such cracks ...

Repair of Longitudinal Joints and Cracks
New Technologies in Construction and Rehabilitation of Portland Cement Concrete Pavement and Bridge Deck Pavement, 2009Longitudinal cracking and longitudinal joint separations are commonly observed distresses in concrete pavements. The Texas Department of Transportation instituted a research project to determine the causes and to recommend repair methods. Repair methods that are generally recommended to repair cracks and joints are (1) cross stitching; (2) slot ...

Formation of longitudinal cracks on slabs
Steel in Translation, 2010The heat transfer in the mold of a continuous slab-casting machine is analyzed, in order to understand the source of longitudinal cracks on continuous-cast billet. Recommendations are outlined for predicting crack formation and minimizing billet defects.

Crack Arrest Modes of a Transverse Crack Going Through a Longitudinal Crack or a Hole
Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology, 1981The process of a transverse crack intersecting a longitudinal central crack, a longitudinal eccentric crack, or a central hole was investigated by means of high-speed photography and caustics. The results show that the crack momentarily arrests when arriving at the discontinuity, then reinitiates later, usually with a different velocity.

Rutting and Longitudinal Cracking and Temperature Cracking: A Case Study
1986US 23, Greenup County, Ashland-South Shore, developed rutting and transverse and longitudinal cracking. The pavement was about 14 years old and had served heavy trucks. Road Rater tests, crack surveys, and various inspections had been made prior to the fall of 1985.

LONGITUDINAL CRACK IN PRESTRESSED BOX BEAM
PCI Journal, 1969A WIDE AND DEEP LONGITUDINAL CRACK DEVELOPED IN THE BOTTOM OF A BRIDGE BOX BEAM AND EXTENDED FROM ONE SUPPORT ALMOST TO MID-SPAN. A DETERMINATION OF THE MOST PROBABLE CAUSE OF THE CRACK AND AN EVALUATION OF THE ULTIMATE AND RESERVE STRENGTH OF THE BEAM BY LOAD TESTING TO FAILURE WERE MADE.

The inheritance of longitudinal cracking in carrots
Euphytica, 1966Cracking is a serious problem in many carrot varieties, but especially in the Nantes types. The extent of natural cracking varies considerably depending on the age of the root and on seasonal variation of the environment, especially soil moisture. By piercing roots with a knife it was possible to distinguish plants with a genetic tendency to crack but ...

Longitudinal surface cracks of thin slabs
International Journal of Minerals, Metallurgy, and Materials, 2010Based on the production practice of medium carbon thin slabs in the CSP plant, the reasons and influencing factors for the formation of longitudinal cracks were investigated, and some industrial measures were taken to eliminate the cracks. The results show that the efficient solutions to reduce longitudinal cracks are improving the performance of the ...

The investigation of semi‐strip's stress state with a longitudinal crack
ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 2020AbstractThe article is dedicated to the investigation of the stress state of a semi‐strip weakened by a longitudinal crack. Two statements of the problem are considered. The integral Fourier transform is applied directly to the initial problem. The discontinuous boundary problem which is formulated in vector form is solved with the help of the matrix ...
