Where do new ideas come from? Our view is that building new ideas is a process; new ideas come from old ideas that are revisited, reviewed, extended, and connected (Davis, 1984; Maher & Davis, 1995). Building new ideas also involves the retrieval and modification of representations of existing ideas.

Abstract In the previous chapter, we saw how to allow for heterogeneity among units, the generally observed phenomenon that responses from the same unit are usually uniformly more closely related than responses across units. Some units systematically give higher responses than others under apparently identical conditions.
