Structure of the brachiopod lophophore

Data on the development, structure, and functional morphology of the brachiopod lophophore are analyzed. The common origin of the tentacle apparatus in Lophophorata from the postoral ciliary band of the larva is shown. The brachiopod lophophore is based on the brachial axis consisting of the brachial fold running along the row of tentacles.

Abstract. The internal morphology of the productide brachiopod Anidanthus ussuricus from the Middle Permian of the Takakurayama area, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, shows an evident pattern of brachial ridges that are identified as a four-lobed ptycholophe of the feeding organ or lophophore.

Myoanatomy of the Lophophore in Adult Phoronids and the Evolution of the Phoronid Lophophore

Confocal laser scanning microscopy was used to study the myoanatomy of the lophophore of three phoronids with different types of lophophore: Phoronis ijimai, Phoronis australis, and Phoronopsis harmeri. A four-part ground plan of the lophophoral musculature was detected in all three species and was previously reported for Phoronis ovalis.

Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses of seven concatenated fragments of nuclear-encoded housekeeping genes indicate that Lophotrochozoa is monophyletic, i.e., the lophophorate groups Bryozoa, Brachiopoda and Phoronida are more closely related to molluscs and annelids than to Deuterostomia or Ecdysozoa.
