On the Shear Degradation of Lost-Circulation Materials

SPE Drilling & Completion, 2013
Summary Lost-circulation materials (LCMs) are widely used to mitigate fluid loss when drilling permeable zones. Their effectiveness, however, generally declines with circulation time, and this decline is linked to the reduction in the average size of the solids components, or “shear degradation.” In this paper, dimensional analysis and ...

Alternative Lost Circulation Material for Depleted Reservoirs

OTC Brasil, 2015
Abstract The problem of lost circulation occurs almost permanently during drilling operations. When drilling highly permeable, highly fractured, and depleted zones, large drilling fluid losses lead to increased operational expenses. Lost circulation may have several consequences, including fluid inflow, wellbore collapse, formation ...

Size Degradation of Granular Lost Circulation Materials

IADC/SPE Drilling Conference and Exhibition, 2012
Abstract Lost circulation is a major cause of drilling non-productive time with significant cost implications for many locations throughout the world. Increased attention on the performance of lost circulation materials and engineered solutions to lost circulation, such as wellbore strengthening and the recycling lost circulation ...

Wood Fibre Based Lost Circulation Materials

Volume 8: Polar and Arctic Sciences and Technology; Petroleum Technology, 2018
In this paper both a coarse and fine wood fibre type of Lost Circulation Material (LCM) is tested in the laboratory. It is shown how these fibre treatments work. The fibre type is partially oil wetting making them suitable for application in oil based drilling fluids.

Performance Evaluation of Commercial Lost Circulation Materials

Materials Today: Proceedings, 2019
Abstract Lost circulation can be considered as one of the crucial drilling problems during drilling a hydrocarbon well and can cause a lot of negative consequences including formation damage, loss of well and requires a lot of money to solve this problem.

Compaction and Morphology of Lost Circulation Materials

SPE Journal
Summary Lost circulation material (LCM) selection is critical to effectively and efficiently treating wellbore fluid losses in geothermal drilling where costs of treatment can be as much as 30% of the total drilling cost. We conducted several uniaxial compaction experiments on 10 different materials and several material mixtures to ...

Materials for Controlling Severe Lost Circulation - Laboratory Evaluation

SPE Latin America and Caribbean Petroleum Engineering Conference, 2017
Abstract Lost circulation is still today one of the most costly problems for oil and gas operators. It may occur into permeable formations, depleted zones, induced or nature fractures and cavernous formations while drilling, cementing or during workover jobs in the well.
