Fine structure of hearing threshold and loudness perception
Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2004Hearing thresholds measured with high-frequency resolution show a quasiperiodic change in level called threshold fine structure (or microstructure). The effect of this fine structure on loudness perception over a range of stimulus levels was investigated in 12 subjects. Three different approaches were used.

Effect of reverberation on loudness perception
Stimuli with a slow-attack/fast-decay (S-F) envelope are judged to be louder than stimuli with a temporally-reversed, equal-energy version of the same envelope (fast-attack/slow-decay or F-S). It may be that the energy in the tails of F-S stimuli is discounted from loudness judgments because it is perceptually attributed to room reverberation.

Temporal and spectral interaction in loudness perception
An experiment was conducted to investigate how changes in spectral content influence loudness judgments. Six listeners were asked to discriminate sounds, which were of one second duration and changing in level every 0.1 s. In one condition the first half of the sound was low-pass filtered and the second half high-pass filtered.
