Emerging bacterial infectious diseases/pathogens vectored by human lice

open access: yesTravel Medicine and Infectious Disease, 2023
Human lice have always been a major public health concern due to their vector capacity for louse-borne infectious diseases, like trench fever, louse-borne relapsing fever, and epidemic fever, which are caused by Bartonella quintana, Borrelia recurrentis,

Electroplated Polymer‐Modified Carbon Fiber for Performance‐Enhancing Composite Interfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Chitosan is electrodeposited onto the surface of carbon fibers in an energy‐efficient and simplified procedure, enhancing interfacial bonding potential with various epoxy matrices. The coated fibers effectively function as reinforcing fillers in both continuous and discontinuous states.

Leptocybe invasa Fisher & La Salle, 2004 and Ophelimus maskelli Haliday, 1844 - two new records of gall forming Eulophidae from Malta (Hymenoptera, Chalcidoidea) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The Eulophidae (Hymenoptera, Chalcidoidea) currently accommodates more than 4,000 described species worldwide in some 300 genera (noyES, 2003). In Europe, the family is represented by about 1,100 species (GAuld & Bolton, 1988).

Soft Electromagnetic Actuator and Oscillator

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, Volume 10, Issue 6, March 18, 2025.
This work presents a groundbreaking soft electromagnetic system capable of bistable actuation and self‐regulated oscillation. Using liquid metal and silicone as a compliant conductor, the actuator enables force generation, sensing, and feedback with minimal power.

Confidence in assessing the effectiveness of bath treatments for the control of sea lice on Norwegian salmon farms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis is the most important ectoparasite of farmed salmonids in the Northern hemisphere, having a major economic and ecological impact on the sustainability of this sector of the aquaculture industry. To a large extent,

Self‐Aligned Waveguide Array Integrated with Flat Microlenses for Environment‐Adaptive and High‐Resolution Compound Eye Vision

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
For an amphibious high‐resolution compound eye vision system, environment‐adaptive self‐aligned waveguides are integrated with high‐density flat microlenses. Fabrication, optical performance, and environmental adaptability are investigated, demonstrating stable focusing, efficient light collection, and enhanced spatial resolution.

Low levels of chicken body louse (Menacanthus stramineus) infestations affect chicken welfare in a cage-free housing system

open access: yesParasites & Vectors
Background The chicken body louse is an obligate ectoparasite of domestic chickens. Chicken body lice feed on feathers, and infestation with this louse is linked to decreases in egg production, hen weight, and feed conversion efficiency.

The use of a general linear model to identify epidemiological factors affecting the abundance of chalimus stages of the sea louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) on Scottish salmon farms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
In this communication chalimus lice numbers in the second, third and fourth quarters of the production cycle are examined in relation to a range of prevailing risk factors using an approach based on that already taken for mobile stages (Revie et al.

High‐Chroma, High‐Contrast Tunable Color Coatings Using Sb2S3 in a Metal‐Dielectric Stack

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics Research, EarlyView.
A novel tunable color coating design is presented, using the phase‐change material Sb2S3 in a Fabry–Perot cavity. The resulting coatings yield bright, attractive colors, and display a significant color change when annealed using a hotplate or a laser. This demonstrates that Sb2S3 is a promising candidate for use in tunable color coatings.
