Exploring urban spatial heterogeneity and socio-environmental attributes of household greenhouse gas emissions

open access: yesFrontiers in Sustainable Cities
Understanding urban spatial heterogeneity of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from sectoral household consumption is crucial to facilitate moves towards low-carbon cities.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Towards a Low-Carbon Society via Hydrogen and Carbon Capture and Storage: Social Acceptance from a Stakeholder Perspective

open access: yesJournal of Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems, 2021
Transformation concepts towards a low-carbon society often require new technology and infrastructure that evoke protests in the population. Therefore, it is crucial to understand positions and conflicts in society to achieve social acceptance. This paper

Predictive and prognostic biomarkers of Bacillus Calmette‐Guérin therapy failure in bladder cancer patients: A systematic review

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
High‐risk bladder cancer is typically treated with Bacillus Calmette‐Guérin (BCG), but 30–40% of patients relapse. No FDA‐ or CE‐approved biomarkers currently predict or prognosticate BCG failure. We systematically reviewed the literature and identified 72 eligible studies, revealing several promising biomarkers associated with BCG treatment response ...

Structural studies and functional engineering of NanX: an anhydro‐sialic acid transporter from Escherichia coli

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Biophysical characterisation shows that NanX, a membrane transport protein from the major facilitator superfamily (MFS), forms both monomers and dimers after purification. AlphaFold modelling and substrate docking provide information on residues likely involved in substrate recognition for NanX and another MFS member, NanT.

De novo synthesis of short‐chain aldehydes and hydrocarbons secreted by the brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, mainly secretes 4‐oxo‐(E)‐2‐hexenal, (E)‐2‐decenal, dodecane and tridecane, a mixture representative of that released by many heteropterans. We demonstrated that H. halys can synthesise these secretory components de novo using dietary glucose.

Low-carbon transition risk [PDF]

open access: yes
As evidence of climate change mounts, the urgency increases of transitioning to a low-carbon economy and society. There is a need for greater attention on the countervailing “transition risks” to which the low-carbon transition is likely to give rise ...
