The high strain-rate behaviour of three molecular weights of polyethylene examined with a magnesium alloy split-Hopkinson pressure bar

open access: yes, 2013
A traditional split-Hopkinson pressure bar system has been modified by the addition of ZK60A magnesium alloy pressure bars in order to increase the resolution of data when examining specimens of low-density, high-density and ultra-high molecular weight ...

Degradation of low-density polyethylene by a novel strain of bacteria isolated from the plastisphere of marine ecosystems [PDF]

open access: yesGlobal Journal of Environmental Science and Management
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Low-density polyethylene is one of the dominant recalcitrant plastic pollutants in the ocean, thus causing complicated problems. Biodegradation is an efficient, environmentally friendly, and sustainable option to overcome these

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Blends of linear-low-density polyethylene and thermoplastic bloodmeal using maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene as compatibilizer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) was blended with Novatein Thermoplastic from bloodmeal (NTP.) The compatibilizing effect of maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (PE-g-MAH) on mechanical, morphology thermal properties and water absorption were ...

Permittivity measurement of thermoplastic composites at elevated temperature [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
[Abstract]: The material properties of greatest importance in microwave processing of a dielectric are the complex relative permittivity Epsilon = Epsilon' - jEpsilon'', and the loss tangent, tan Delta = Epsilon'/Epsilon''.

COMP–PMEPA1 axis promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in breast cancer cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study reveals that cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in breast cancer. We identify PMEPA1 (protein TMEPAI) as a novel COMP‐binding partner that mediates EMT via binding to the TSP domains of COMP, establishing the COMP–PMEPA1 axis as a key EMT driver in breast cancer.
