Cardiovascular Health in Women—Across the Lifespan

open access: yesClinical Endocrinology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of mortality and morbidity among women worldwide. However, CVD continues to be perceived as a predominantly male issue. CVD in women therefore remains understudied, underrecognized and undertreated.

Treatment of aortic stenosis with a self-expanding transcatheter valve: the International Multi-centre ADVANCE Study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Aim Transcatheter aortic valve implantation has become an alternative to surgery in higher risk patients with symptomatic aortic stenosis. The aim of the ADVANCE study was to evaluate outcomes following implantation of a self-expanding transcatheter ...

Integrated biomarker landscape for the early detection and management of calcific aortic valve disease

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Clinical Investigation, EarlyView.
Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD), the leading valvular disorder in older adults, progresses from sclerosis to severe stenosis without effective medical therapies, making early non‐invasive detection essential. Circulating and mechanistic biomarkers reflect core pathogenic axes, including lipid oxidation, inflammation, mineral metabolism ...

Severe mitral stenosis as a cause of paradoxical low-flow, low-gradient severe aortic stenosis: an explorative study on hemodynamics and outcomes

open access: yesFrontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine
BackgroundAortic stenosis (AS) and mitral stenosis (MS) are valvular heart diseases that may present concomitantly, particularly in regions where rheumatic heart disease remains prevalent.

Hemodynamic and microcirculatory early adaptations following transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI): A physiological pilot study

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Clinical Investigation, EarlyView.
This pilot physiological study, involving 20 patients with severe aortic stenosis, shows that transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) induces rapid changes in both macrocirculatory parameters, reflecting the release of chronic obstruction. We observed improved tissue perfusion by postoperative Day 1, independent of macrocirculatory parameters ...

A guide to the types, structures, and multifaceted functions of matrix metalloproteinases in cancer

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) orchestrate cancer progression and metastasis through proteolytic and non‐proteolytic actions. By remodeling the tumor microenvironment, enhancing growth factor availability, and modulating cell behavior, MMPs promote proliferation, migration or invasion, and epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition. Alongside extracellular

Comparative analysis of metabolic and functional cardiac alterations in diet‐ and genetically induced mouse models of cardiac dysfunction

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Dietary and genetic stress trigger different routes to heart failure. In mice, a carbohydrate‐free high‐fat diet caused mitochondrial dysfunction and impaired energy production with preserved pumping function, while genetic obesity led to heart enlargement, fibrosis, and reduced function.
