Observations of Low-level Jet Physics and Impacts

2020
The Great Plains low-level jet (LLJ) is a planetary boundary layer phenomenon of strong winds spanning thousands of square kilometers. These LLJs are primarily nocturnal, and an event?s lifetime can exceed 12 hours. LLJ wind speeds can reach 30 m/s within the lowest several hundred meters of the atmosphere. The formation mechanisms of the strongest and

The Low-Level Jet as a Western Boundary Current

Monthly Weather Review, 1976
Abstract The low-level jet which flows across the equator and up the Somali coast is considered as a western boundary current of the East African mountain chain. The jet is assumed to be forced by the low-level divergence in the subtropical high pressure belt of the Southern Hemisphere and convergence in the monsoon trough.

Importance of Low-Level Jets to Climate: A Review

Journal of Climate, 1996
Abstract Low-level jets (LLJs) occur frequently in many parts of the world. These low-level wind speed maxima are important for both the horizontal and vertical fluxes of temperature and moisture and have been found to be associated with the development and evolution of deep convection.

Low-level Jet at White Sands Missile Range

Journal of Applied Meteorology, 1966
Abstract Wind data collected at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, frequently show a sharp maximum in the wind speed profile below 3000 ft. This low-level maximum is often supergeostrophic and associated with large values of wind shear in the lower levels.
