Predictability Affects Spoken Phonological Systems Indirectly

open access: yesLanguage and Linguistics Compass, Volume 20, Issue 1, January/February 2026.
ABSTRACT The last three decades have seen a large increase in attempts to explain phonetic and phonological patterns using information theoretic properties such as frequency and predictability. One recurring theme is the attempt to explain phonetic and phonological weakening as following directly from low information content. I argue that the actuation

Fractional Dynamics of Nonlinear Liquid Dispersion Pattern Drops: A Robust Analytical Study of Modulation Instability and Compacton Structures

open access: yesComputational and Mathematical Methods, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Nonlinear dispersion phenomena in liquid media often lead to the formation of localized structures such as compact wave packets and dispersion drops. The present investigation demonstrates that the proposed analytical framework yields accurate approximate solutions, successfully captures compacton‐like structures, and clearly reveals the critical ...

Computational Modeling of Reticular Materials: The Past, the Present, and the Future

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, Volume 37, Issue 52, December 29, 2025.
Reticular materials are advanced materials with applications in emerging technologies. A thorough understanding of material properties at operating conditions is critical to accelerate the deployment at an industrial scale. Herein, the status of computational modeling of reticular materials is reviewed, supplemented with topical examples highlighting ...

The Integration of Norse‐Derived Terms in English: Effects of Formal Similarity1

open access: yesTransactions of the Philological Society, Volume 123, Issue 3, Page 556-591, November 2025.
Abstract Language change arising from language contact is a complex phenomenon. Peter Matthews encouraged researchers to consider it as firmly grounded in the behaviour of individual speakers. We apply this perspective to investigate the integration of Norse‐derived terms into medieval English, testing for the effect of their phonetic similarity to ...

Approximating a Spatially‐Heterogeneously Mass‐Emitting Object by Multiple Point Sources in a Diffusion Model

open access: yesStudies in Applied Mathematics, Volume 155, Issue 5, November 2025.
ABSTRACT Various biological cells secrete diffusing chemical compounds into their environment for communication purposes. Secretion usually takes place over the cell membrane in a spatially heterogeneous manner. Mathematical models of these processes will be part of more elaborate models, for example, of the movement of immune cells that react to ...

Modeling Dynamic Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Using a Linearization Technique

open access: yesChemElectroChem, Volume 12, Issue 18, September 15, 2025.
This article investigates the modeling of dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Using a linearization technique, three mathematical models are defined – dynamic, stationary, and filtered. The results show a closeness of the dynamic model to the experimental practice and significant effects of nonstationarity in the low‐frequency region.

Quantum Algorithms for Quantum Molecular Systems: A Survey

open access: yesWIREs Computational Molecular Science, Volume 15, Issue 3, May/June 2025.
Quantum algorithms for quantum molecular systems: from molecular encoding, to Hamiltonian simulation, static properties, and quantum advantage. ABSTRACT Solving quantum molecular systems presents a significant challenge for classical computation. The advent of early fault‐tolerant quantum computing devices offers a promising avenue to address these ...

Sounds of the future and past

open access: yesBritish Journal of Psychology, Volume 116, Issue 2, Page 316-335, May 2025.
Abstract We report evidence of sound symbolism for the abstract concept of time across seven experiments (total N = 825). Participants associated the future and past with distinct phonemes (Experiment 1). In particular, using nearly 8000 pseudowords, we found associations between the future and high front vowels and voiced fricatives/affricatives, and ...

Language Change Across Real and Apparent‐Time: Case Studies From Yucatan Spanish

open access: yesLanguage and Linguistics Compass, Volume 19, Issue 3, May/June 2025.
ABSTRACT Variationist sociolinguistics possesses two powerful techniques for examining language change across time: real‐time analyses, where the relative distribution of variants is compared for two or more different points in time, and apparent‐time analysis, where different age groups in the same study are taken to represent different stages of ...
