Settlement and tilt of low-rise buildings

Geotechnical Engineering, 2004
Where deep foundations are not an economically viable solution, foundation problems may occur at low-rise housing developments on poor ground. It is usually feasible to provide a raft foundation relatively cheaply for lightly loaded buildings. When differential settlement occurs, foundations of adequate stiffness will cause the building to tilt as a ...

The significance of cracks in low‐rise buildings

Structural Survey, 2002
This paper suggests a framework for the systematic investigation of cracking in low‐rise buildings. The procedure to follow is described in detail and monitoring equipment is recommended. A data‐gathering and assessment methodology is presented and the important question of whether the cracking is “significant” is considered.

Low-rise Buildings and Architectural Aerodynamics

Architectural Science Review, 2005
The influence of Wind Engineering on Architectural Aerodynamics has traditionally been focused on expensive, tall structures. For a variety of reasons (reduced cost of the wind-tunnel study, population moves to the tropics yielding a higher hurricane exposure, architecturally-complex, lowrise, community buildings, etc.) the wind tunnel is being ...

Wind Effects of an Upstream Building on a Low-Rise Building

Materials Today: Proceedings, 2019
Abstract The influence of an upstream building on the suction pressure on the roof top of a low rise building was earlier studied. This work computationally validates the original experimental results, and provides further insights on the effect of geometric modification for the tall building.

Net pressures on a low-rise full-scale building

Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 1999
The quasi-steady design approach is used by many wind loading standards such as AS1170.2 1989, to determine the design net (i.e. external-internal) pressures on cladding elements and fixtures of low-rise buildings. External and internal pressures measured on the WERFL test building at Texas Tech were used to determine the net pressures at selected ...

Aerodynamics of low-rise buildings and codification

Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 1993
Abstract Translating the results obtained in a wind tunnel experiment to load specifications for a Code of Practice needs an intensive cooperation between aerodynamicists and structural engineers. Generally, a pure aerodynamic analysis of only the wind action could not be a sufficient basis for a load specification.
