Modeling Low-Volume Road Erosion

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 1999
Low-volume roads are recognized as one of the primary sources of sediment in many watersheds. The authors have carried out research on the details of the complex soil erosion processes occurring on low-volume roads for more than 10 years. An overview of their research summarizes the results of numerous past and ongoing field and computer modeling ...

Soil Stabilization in Low-Volume Roads

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2011
Overwhelming evidence supports the importance of gravel roads. However, road agencies are increasingly faced with the necessity of relying on marginal materials in construction of low-volume roads. Use of these materials necessitates that stabilization be used to alter the engineering parameters to ensure that corrugation, erosion, rutting, poor pass ...

Matting Solutions for Low-Volume Roads

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2011
An evaluation of 11 commercial roadway matting systems was conducted to determine their effectiveness in carrying heavy vehicle traffic over loose-sand subgrades. Three of the 11 matting systems were also evaluated under the same loading conditions over soft, fine-grained subgrades.

Models of Operating Speeds for Low-Volume Roads

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2011
Recent studies have documented a noticeable disparity between the speeds for which roads are designed and the actual operating speeds. An important reason for driving errors on two-lane rural roads is the misjudgment of the real course of the road by road users.

Overlay Thickness Design for Low-Volume Roads

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2015
Identifying the appropriate overlay thicknesses is critical to a local transportation agency's ability to maintain its pavement network. Local agencies often use empirical approaches for designing the overlay thickness for low-volume pavements. For example, overlay design for low-volume roads in Illinois is currently carried out using assumed layer ...

Development of Economical Low‐Volume Road Bridges

Journal of Structural Engineering, 1988
Low‐volume road bridges are currently designed according to the same specifications as urban highway bridges. Thus, many of the low‐volume bridge designs are overly conservative and uneconomical. This paper addresses this issue and proposes modifications of the existing specifications in the area of fatigue, deflection, allowable stress, composite ...

Enzyme Stabilization of Low-Volume Gravel Roads

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2015
The purpose of this research was to investigate the efficacy of enzyme stabilization on unpaved, low-volume roads through formal field experimentation with a control section. An experimental site was divided into six lanes for treatment with water only, portland cement, a combination of portland cement and Enzyme A, Enzyme A only, Enzyme B only, and a

Low-Volume Roads with Neat Sand Bases

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2015
Vast areas of Southern Africa are covered with surficial sands of Tertiary to Quaternary age. These consist of aeolian sands that are widespread in the western areas of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Angola and reach as far north as the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as coastal and alluvial sands more prevalent in the eastern ...

Materials for Sealed Low-Volume Roads

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 1999
Many unsealed roads carry relatively high traffic, which results in excessive maintenance requirements and costs. Sealing of these roads with a bituminous surfacing is typically cost-effective if minimal upgrading of the existing road needs to be done.

MGEOT: A low-volume road designer

Geotextiles and Geomembranes, 1993
Abstract A calculation program is described to design geotextiles in low-volume roads of soft subsoil. The theory is based on membrane action. The program specifies the required quality of the geotextile as a function of the acceptable rut depth.
