The efficacy of retrograde and antegrade enemas in the management of low anterior resection syndrome in patients undergoing rectal resection: a systematic review and meta-analysis

open access: yesBMC Gastroenterology
Background Rectal resection could potentially cause low anterior resection syndrome (LARS). Although recent studies have reported the efficacy of enema against LARS, no systematic review and meta-analysis has been conducted.

Risk Factors in Anastomotic Leaks After Low Anterior Resection for Rectal Cancer and the Effects of Diverting Stoma on Clinical Results

open access: yesTurkish Journal of Colorectal Disease, 2018
Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors which might render patients who underwent rectal cancer surgery prone to anastomotic leaks (AL) and to investigate whether diverting stoma (DS) alleviated the severity of AL.

Self‐Assembled Nanoclay Gel With Spheroid MSC‐Derived Exosome Mimetics to Integrate Demineralized Bone Matrix and Noggin‐Targeting miRNA for Synergistic Osteogenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We report a versatile nanoclay gel carrier platform that enhances the osteogenic efficacy of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) by integrating nanoclay‐based self‐assembly with cell‐derived exosome mimetics loaded with noggin‐targeting miR‐200c. This design amplifies BMP signaling, thereby promoting DBM‐mediated osteogenesis and offering a promising ...

Translational Considerations for Injectable Biomaterials and Bioscaffolds to Repair and Regenerate Brain Tissue

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
The repair and regeneration of brain tissue faces both biological and technical challenges. Injectable bioscaffolds offer new opportunities to stimulate tissue regrowth in the brain by recruiting neural stem cells. Here, the translational issues are reviewed that need to be address to advance this promising new therapeutic approach from the bench to ...

Targeting Post‐Irradiation Thyroid Dysfunction: Electrospun Scaffolds As A Dual‐Action Approach for Antioxidant and Immune Modulation

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Radiation‐induced hypothyroidism follows head and neck radiotherapy due to oxidative stress and inflammation. Electrospun polycaprolactone scaffolds containing adenosine have potential to modulate thyroid repair. Scaffolds enhance thyrocyte proliferation, antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase and catalase, reduce senescence and apoptosis markers ...

[Comment] Comparison of outcomes for abdominoperineal resection versus low anterior resection for very-low rectal cancer

open access: yes结直肠肛门外科
[Background] The management of very-low rectal cancer is one of the most challenging issues faced by general and colorectal surgeons. Many feel compelled to pursue abdominoperineal resection (APR) over low anterior resection (LAR) to optimize oncologic ...

Engineering Extracellular Vesicle Production Through Magnetic Ion Channel Activation for Bone Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Magnetic Ion Channel Activation (MICA) enables remote stimulation of mechanosensitive ion channels using functionalised magnetic nanoparticles, enhancing extracellular vesicle (EV) biogenesis is pre‐osteoblasts. MICA desrived EVs exhibit typical nano‐vesicular characteristics but display superior pro‐osteogeneic activity, promoting mesenchymal stem ...

Temporally Delayed Deployment of Photo‐Responsive Liquid Crystal Polymer Networks Toward Neural Interfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Deployable medical devices typically need external stimuli to trigger deployment. However, external stimuli are difficult to supply within tissues. Here, we describe a strategy to deploy small‐scale structures into soft tissues after insertion without the need for any stimulus. We demonstrate deployment within a tissue phantom.

The use of patient-generated health data in the management of low anterior resection syndrome: a qualitative study

open access: yesFrontiers in Surgery
BackgroundThe cornerstone of low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) treatment is self-management, which requires patient engagement. Colorectal surgeons and nurses may use patient-generated health data (PGHD) to help guide patients in their use of self ...

Deciphering the Role of Cancer Stem Cells in Breast Cancer Brain Colonization Using a Novel Patient‐Derived Model

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows that stem‐like cells isolated from breast cancer brain metastases drive the spread and growth of tumors in the brain. Among them, a highly adhesive subgroup initiates metastasis and resists many drugs. By closely reflecting patient tumors, these models help identify new targets and improve the development of effective treatments ...
