Mitochondrial Genome Reduction and Accelerated Evolution in Planktonic Foraminiferans

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 4, August 2026.
The mitochondrial genomes of the eukaryotic lineage Retaria (Foraminifera and Radiolaria) show reductions in multiple gene categories, including complex I, transfer RNAs (tRNAs), ribosomal proteins, and ribosomal RNAs. In planktonic foraminifera, this reduction is even more pronounced, with the potential loss of atp and other genes.

Experimental Demonstration of Coherent Optical Storage via Precreated Macroscopic Coherence in Eu3+:Y2SiO5

open access: yesAdvanced Quantum Technologies, Volume 9, Issue 8, August 2026.
The PLMC protocol is implemented using a four‐level system within the 7F0↔5D0${}^7F_0 \leftrightarrow {}^5D_0$ optical transition of 151Eu3+$^{151}\mathrm{Eu}^{3+}$ ions (site 1) in the 0.1%‐doped Eu3+${\rm Eu}^{3+}$:Y2SiO5${\rm Y}_2{\rm SiO}_5$ crystal, and the experimental pulse sequence includes two distinct stages: (i) pre‐creation of macroscopic ...

When Recovery Becomes Infeasible: A Markov Model of Housing Abandonment Risk in Flood‐Prone Areas

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 14, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Floods can undermine long‐term community viability by depressing housing markets and triggering property abandonment cycles. This study estimates the risk of housing abandonment by integrating traditional flood‐risk frameworks with the concept of sub‐replacement—a condition where the cost of repairing a house exceeds its market value.

Mars' O+ ${\mathbf{O}}^{+}$ and O2+ ${\mathbf{O}}_{\mathbf{2}}^{+}$ Ion Escape During Disappearing Solar Wind Events

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Disappearing solar wind events (DSWEs), intervals when the solar wind proton density <1 cm−3 ${\text{cm}}^{-3}$, represent one extreme of the Mars solar wind interaction. Using data from NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission from February 2016 to May 2024, 154 orbits across 90 unique days were identified.

Bow Shock Current Closure Through the Magnetosheath for Non‐Zero IMF By—Results From Hybrid Simulations

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract The bow shock current (BSC) flows on the bow shock due to the compression of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) across the shock. Although previous studies have shown that the BSC can connect to magnetospheric current systems via the magnetosheath, it is still not known how this happens.
