Dynamic optimization of low-pressure carburizing furnaces

2021 23rd International Conference on Process Control (PC), 2021
This paper presents the modelling and dynamic optimization of low pressure carburizing of steel. A cyclic hybrid model alternating two modes, i.e. the two stages of the process, boost and diffusion stages, is proposed. Each mode is characterized by a set of ordinary differential equations and its corresponding transition conditions and transition ...

Study of tantalum hemicarbide (Ta2C) production by low pressure carburizing

open access: yes, 2015
Tantalum is a very dense metal (d = 16.6) and has a very high melting temperature of 2996°C. This material is particularly required for crucibles used for pyrochemical applications. Early studies show that a carburizing treatment enhances corrosion resistance from liquid metals.

Copper Evaporation During Low Pressure Carburization

AM&P Technical Articles, 2018
Abstract Stringent pressure control and gas species type both play an important role in minimizing the evaporation rate of not only copper, but other elements susceptible to evaporation in vacuum systems. The article describes a study investigating the effect of temperature, pressure, and carrier gas species on the amount of copper ...

Modeling Gas and Low Pressure Carburizing of Steel

Heat Treating Conference, 2013
Abstract Industrial carburizing parameter optimization traditionally relies on time-consuming and expensive trial-and-error methods, yielding suboptimal results. To address this challenge, the Center for Heat Treating Excellence developed CarbTool, a sophisticated simulation program designed to calculate carbon concentration profiles ...

Low-pressure hollow cathode plasma source carburizing technique at low temperature

Surface and Coatings Technology, 2021
Abstract A low-pressure hollow cathode plasma source carburizing was developed as a novel surface treatment technique based on the active screen plasma carburizing combined with hollow cathode sources. The cylindric cathodic cage with array holes was made of pure graphite, where the hollow cathode graphite tubes were inlaid on.

Microstructure, microhardness and impact toughness of low pressure carburized PM steels

open access: yes, 2011
The effect of low pressure carburizing (LPC) on two low alloyed sintered steels processed according to differentroutes to obtain different amounts of open porosity was studied. In presence of an open porosity, overcarburizing promotes the precipitation of grain boundary carbides in the Cr steel, and the formation ofretained austenite in the Cr free one.

Low-Pressure Carburizing of Powder Metal Components

Heat Treating Conference, 2017
Abstract Transmission-manufacturers constantly need to adapt their products and manufacturing technologies to meet future’s market and legislation requirements such as cost-efficiency, running-smoothness and drivetrain-agility. Components made of powder metal (“PM-components”) are established in today’s transmission industry as a cost ...

Copper Evaporation During Low Pressure Carburizing

Heat Treating Conference, 2017
Abstract Low pressure carburizing (LPC) in a vacuum furnace is increasingly the preferred method of case hardening for aerospace gears, and acetylene is often one of the gases used in the process. Selective case hardening is common with gears, where certain sections of a part are “stopped off” or “masked” to prevent carburization at ...

Low Pressure Carburizing in a Vacuum Furnace

Heat Treating Conference, 2015
Abstract Historically, this carburizing has been performed in an endothermic gas consisting of CO2, CH4, CO, etc, but carburizing in low pressure with the proper gas mixture changes the landscape. Using C2 H2, the process is no longer endothermic as C2H2 is a catalytically decomposable hydrocarbon and dissociates in the presence of an ...
