A geographic perspective on fog and low stratus formation and dissipation over central Europe
2022
In this contribution geographic patterns of fog and low stratus (FLS) formation and dissipation over central Europe are presented using a novel satellite-based data set.
Formation and dissipation of FLS are the results of complex interactions of meteorological and land-surface processes.

Airborne Droplet Sampler for Use in Fogs and Low-Level Stratus
Journal of Applied Meteorology, 1975Abstract A light weight mechanical sampler is described which can be flown into fogs or stratus decks by means of a tethered kite balloon to obtain droplet size spectra at a precise altitude. This instrument has been compared with other devices in laboratory fogs and operated in marine fogs from the deck of a ship.

Homing Pigeons’ Flight Over and Under Low Stratus
1978The Homing pigeons were released and followed by helicopter from mountains emerging like islands from a layer of low stratus clouds in Switzerland, with the loft being under the stratus. Different kinds of behavior were observed: (1) A heading toward a visible mountain-island, flying over the stratus in approximate home direction; (2) flying very low ...

Low stratus clouds are a commonly occurring phenomenon over the Swiss Plateau during wintertime and can last up to several days. This almost stable characteristic is exploited in the CLOUDLAB project, which aims to gain a more profound understanding of ice crystal formation and growth by introducing seeding particles into a supercooled liquid cloud ...

Abstract A Turbulent-radiative description of the low-level atmosphere incorporating stratus cloud and fog is developed based on the methodology of second-order closure. Existence criteria for surface layer fog are developed on the basis of the turbulent description.

Profiles of Low-Level Stratus Cloud Microphysics Deduced from Ground-Based Measurements
Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, 2003The microwave radiometer‐derived cloud liquid water path (LWP) and a profile of radar reflectivity are used to derive a profile of cloud liquid water content (LWC). Two methods (M1 and M2) have been developed for inferring the profile of cloud-droplet effective radius (re) in liquid phase or liquid dominant mixed phase stratocumulus clouds.

The use of an objective index in the synoptic routine work in order to forecast low stratus
Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics, 2003¶The cold seasons (October to March) of the years 1960 to 1984 have been investigated for inversions around Vienna. The basic material consists of climate and synoptic data as well as soundings taken at 0000 UTC and 1200 UTC at Vienna – Hohe Warte. These observations are filtered in three steps.
