A Holistic Catchment‐Scale Framework to Guide Flood and Drought Mitigation Towards Improved Biodiversity Conservation and Human Wellbeing

open access: yesWIREs Water, Volume 12, Issue 1, January/February 2025.
We propose a holistic catchment‐scale framework that promotes flood and drought mitigation by increasing water retention, infiltration and subsurface water storage, while supporting biodiversity, ecosystem resilience and climate adaptation. This framework combines conventional civil engineering methods, nature‐based solutions and biodiversity ...

To mix, or not to mix?: Mitogenomic insights for risk assessment of an interpopulation translocations of the critically endangered European mink

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 7, Issue 1, January 2025.
This population‐scale analysis of the mitogenome in the critically endangered European mink Mustela lutreola reveals surprising diversity within the previously presumed homogeneous French‐Spanish population, challenging concerns of inbreeding. Despite lower nucleotide diversity, the French‐Spanish group exhibits impressive haplotype diversity, ranking ...

open access: yesGeoscience Data Journal, Volume 11, Issue 4, Page 1058-1072, October 2024.
The paper presents a new open‐source toolbox, ClimShift, developed in R for detecting climate change (climate shift). It was designed based on the cosine similarity index to identify locations/regions with similar climate features (32 temperature and precipitation indices were used) over different periods.

Who in the world are the Heruli?1

open access: yesEarly Medieval Europe, Volume 32, Issue 3, Page 284-305, August 2024.
The history of the Heruli represents a historical conundrum. Because of the poor state of the sources, caution is required when analysing this subject. However, the peculiarity of the case encourages us to rethink the way we conceive of and describe migrations in Late Antiquity.

An integrative approach highlights the discrepancy in the genetic, phenotypic, and presumptive taxonomic structure of Phoxinus (Actinopterygii, Leuciscidae, Phoxininae) in Bulgaria

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 105, Issue 1, Page 214-238, July 2024.
Abstract The present drainage network of Bulgaria is the result of a complex Neogene and Quaternary evolution. Karst, which has developed on 23% of the territory, further complicates the hydrological pattern. Fresh waters of Bulgaria drain into the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea basins and can be roughly divided into the Danube (Middle and Lower Danube),
