Estimating temperatures of heated Lower Palaeolithic flint artefacts

Nature Human Behaviour, 2020
Production of stone artefacts using pyro-technology is known from the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic of Europe and the Levant, and the Middle Stone Age in Africa. However, determination of temperatures to which flint artefacts were exposed is impeded by the chemical and structural variability of flint.

Form and Function in the Lower Palaeolithic

2015
The causes of morphological variation within Lower Palaeolithic stone tool assemblages have been subject to debate for decades. As a result of numerous explanatory hypotheses, it forms one of the most substantial areas of research within Palaeolithic archaeology. To date, however, very little research has ever been undertaken into the functional causes

Maritime navigation in the Lower and Middle Palaeolithic

Comptes Rendus de l'Académie des Sciences - Series IIA - Earth and Planetary Science, 1999
Abstract The evidence for Pleistocene maritime colonisations in the Mediterranean and in eastern Asia is reviewed. On present indications, seafating may have begun in Indonesia about a million years ago, leading to the hominid settlement of several islands during the late part of the Early Pleistocene.

Trouble in the Japanese Lower and Middle Palaeolithic

Before Farming, 2002
The debate about the occupation of the Japanese archipelago before 30,000 years ago was apparently resolved with the discovery and investigation of a series of sites in north eastern Japan such as Babadan A and latterly Kamitakamori, which seemed to provide securely dated contexts for hominid activity dating to before 500,000 years ago.

On Observations on the Lower Palaeolithic of Northeast Asia

Current Anthropology, 1983
Yi and Clark's paper (CA 24:181-202) pleased me very much, for it illuminated as never before the question of the partition of the Lower Palaeolithic into chopper and handaxe traditions. While it is true, as several commentators mention, that opposition to Movius's scheme has been raised now and then, it has been feeble and at best not influential.
