Compactness and lower semicontinuity properties in $SBD(\Omega)$
Mathematische Zeitschrift, 1998The space \(BD(\Omega)\) of vector fields with bounded deformation is the set of all vector fields \(u= (u^1,u^2,\dots, u^n)\in L^1(\Omega,\mathbb{R}^n)\) whose distributional gradient \(Du\) has a symmetric part which is a bounded Radon measure valued in the space of symmetric \(n\times n\) matrices.

The aim of this paper consists in giving a first characterization of lower semicontinuity for surface integrals in the space of special functions of bounded hessian, showing at the same time some conditions necessarily verified by the integrands.

On lower semicontinuity and relaxation
Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh: Section A Mathematics, 2001Lower semicontinuity and relaxation results in BV are obtained for multiple integrals where the energy density f satisfies lower semicontinuity conditions with respect to (x, u) and is not subjected to coercivity hypotheses. These results call for methods recently developed in the calculus of variations.

Lower Semicontinuity And Coerciveness
1998Abstract The direct methods of the calculus of variations can be summarized in the equation lower semicontinuity + coerciveness existence, meaning that, in order to obtain the existence of minimizers for a certain functional, it suffices to find a suitable topology in which a compact set can be found where a minimizing sequence lies ...
